Bonacci delivers with two; Stuver’s stand preserves DI Orange triumph

Jack Willard (Webster Schroeder) sparked a five-run second inning and made it stick on the mound as DI Gold (7-0-1) continued its unbeaten run in Upstate Baseball League action Wednesday night at Basket Road Field. Willard singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Nick Vogt (Webster Schroeder) base hit to give Gold a lead it never surrendered. After Drew HerrNeckar (Hilton) walked to load the bases, Tanner Frank (Brighton) brought in two more with a single.

Anthony Bonacci (Greece Athena) capped the outburst with a two-out, two-run double. Willard hurled two shutout innings for his league-leading third win of the season. The right-hander struck out two, allowed one walk and one hit. Bonacci drove in four runs with a pair of two-out hits.His two-run single in the fourth gave Gold an 8-4 advantage. Vogt finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Andrew Wallman (Fairport) was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

HerrNeckar walked twice and scored twice. Troy Leibert (Brockport) plated two with a triple in the fourth to pull DI Blue within one at 5-4. Leibert went 2-for-2 on the night. Jacob Heredia (Edison Tech) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base – his sixth of the season. Chase Seibold (Brighton) was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Chris Alfaro (Edison Tech) and Jerrad Fleck (Fairport) both walked and scored a run apiece.

Facing bases loaded with no outs in the top of the seventh, Max Stuver (McQuaid) induced a ground ball for a force out at home plate and retired the final two batters of the game on strikes to preserve the victory. The right-hander worked two scoreless innings to pick up his first win. He struck out two and walked two. DI Orange took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Andrew Sanchez (Rush-Henrietta) connected on a two-out bloop single into shallow centerfield. The next four batters reached base with Caden Hann (Webster Thomas) bringing home the tying run on a bases loaded walk, and Tristan Murray (Home School) drawing the game winner on hit by pitch.

Orange trailed by as many as four runs in the early going. Shane Harisis (Eastridge) brought home two with a two-out single in the second to bring Orange within one at 5-4. Alex Savory (Sodus) plated a pair with a first-inning double as DI Grey jumped to a 3-0 lead. Grey pushed the lead to four in the second inning when Robby Merkov (Webster Schroeder) brought home two with a two-out single to make it 5-1 game. But Hann steadied the ship for Orange. The right-hander hurled a 1-2-3 third and allowed one run on two hits over three innings to give his offense a chance.

DI Grey’s Jacob Thomas (Home School) reached base four times and finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Merkov went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Savory and Andrew Hebert (Webster Schroeder) both were 2-for-4. Cullen Pease (Irondequoit) went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Pease struck out six over three innings of work.
