Chris Bostick‘s future with the Pittsburgh Pirates is in doubt after he was designated for assignment on Monday.
The DFA period can last up to seven days, during which time the Pirates can release him, place him on waivers or delay execution of the waiver requirement and try to trade him.
The move was made in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for reliever Buddy Boshers, who was claimed off waivers from the Houston Astros.
Boshers spent the 2016 and ’17 seasons in the Minnesota Twins organization, splitting time between the MLB team and the Rochester Red Wings.
Bostick, 25, is in his second season in the Pirates organization and was selected to play in the Triple-A All-Star Game both summers. He hit .295 with 4 home runs, 32 RBI, 32 runs, 24 doubles and a .348 on-base percentage in 78 games for Indianapolis this season. He hit .294 last year in 126 games (7 HRs, 57 RBI, 75 runs, 33 doubles, .362 OBP).
A 2011 graduate of Aquinas, Bostick played in just two games for the Pirates this season (0-for-2 in two at-bats). He appeared in 20 games last year (8-for-27, .296).
The Pirates are his fourth organization since he turned pro in the summer of 2011 after being drafted on the 44th round by the Oakland A’s. He was also in the farm system of the Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals. He made his MLB debut last summer with Pittsburgh.
