Needing a win to stay alive, Jake Hewitt (St. John Fisher College) hurled a complete game, and the Lake Monsters defeated the Monarchs, 8-1 to force a decisive game in the 2018 Interstate Collegiate Baseball League Championship Series.
Hewitt struck out nine and walked five in his longest outing of the season. The right-hander allowed five hits and worked out of bases-loaded jams in the third and fifth innings before surrendering a run on a one-out fielder’s choice in the seventh and final inning.
Nate Chase (Grand Valley State) tripled and sparked a two-run fourth, and the Monsters had all the runs they needed for the win. Dom Palma (Manhattan College) followed with an RBI single, and Dan Freese (Cazenovia College) delivered what would be the eventual game winner with a double.
Palma finished 2-for-4 on the night. Freese was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Chase walked twice and scored two runs.
Max Troiani (Bentley University) collected a single, a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Zach Harter and David Stirpe (Messiah College) scored a run apiece.
Tanner Cooper singled and scored the lone Monarchs run.
The Monarchs and Lake Monsters will meet Thursday in the deciding game of the ICBL Championship Series. A 5:45 PM first pitch is scheduled at the University of Rochester.

Jared Wren (St. John Fisher College) allowed one run on five hits in a complete-game effort, and the Monarchs grabbed the early advantage in the 2018 Interstate Collegiate Baseball League Championship Series.
Wren struck out three, walked five and allowed five hits in the championship series opener.
Five straight reached base with two outs in the first as the Monarchs put three runs on the scoreboard and never looked back. Brandon Henshaw (St. Bonaventure University) highlighted the inning with a two-run single.
The Monarchs sent 11 to the plate and added six more runs in the third to all but put the game away.
Mike Jemele (Merrimack College) and Cole Penders (Brockport College) collected two hits apiece to pace the Monarchs offense. Penders scored one run and drove in another. Jemele had a triple and an RBI.
Jackson Smith (Ithaca College) singled, walked, scored twice and drove in a run. Ryan Kalbfus (Gannon University) scored two runs. Stephen Kemp (Medaille College) collected a base hit, walk, run scored and an RBI.
Jonathan Catapano (Grand Valley State) went 2-for-3 to lead the Lake Monsters.
