Maxx Countryman led Avon’s Braves to the program’s first NYS title. The senior starter earned 2018 NYS Class C Player of the Year honors for his efforts.
In 12 starts, Countryman went 10-1 on the season. None of those were more important than his complete-game shutout in the NYS Class Far West Regional when Avon beat Silver Creek/Forestville, 3-0.
In 78 innings of work, Countryman struck out 100 batters and walked 18. He allowed 46 hits of which only nine went for extra bases and finished with an ERA of 1.35.
Avon head coach, Rob Fries, garnered NYS Class C Co-Coach of the Year.
Geneseo’s Jason Valentine joined Countryman on the Class C First Team.
Victor’s Chris Varone nabbed Class AA First Team. The first baseman belted a pair of post-season home runs to lead the Blue Devils to the NYS Class AA semifinals. He crushed a 402-foot bomb to dead center at Rochester’s Frontier Field in Victor’s sectional semifinal win over Webster Schroeder. He followed that with a first-inning two-run shot in Victor’s, 3-1 win over Lancaster in the NYS Far West Regional.
Brockport’s Cole Penders and Pittsford-Mendon’s Jared Petrichick earned NYS Class A first team nods. Penders hit .451 on the season with five doubles and five home runs. He collected 28 RBI and 27 runs scored.

Petrichick hit .432 and drove in 17 runs. He scored 26. Petrichick also struck out 12 in 12.2 innings of work for the Vikings.

Newark’s Ben Cowles and Ezra Maslyn of Midlakes were named to the NYS Class B first team. Cowles hit .512 for Newark with an on-base percentage of .650. The University of Maryland commit connected on four home runs. He tossed 14.2 innings and notched three saves posting an ERA of 0.95. Maslyn threw 20 innings and finished with 2.25 ERA. He hit .324 on the season with six extra-base hits.
