Hewitt pitches Lake Monsters past Monarchs

The Lake Monsters improved to 13-9 on the season with a 10-3 win Thursday night.

Jake Hewitt (St. John Fisher College) started and tossed six innings for his second win of the summer, and the Lake Monsters put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in three of the last four innings. Hewitt struck out four and allowed two runs on four hits. He improved to 2-1. Dan Freese (Cazenovia) paced a 14-hit attack going 3-for-4 with three RBI on the night. The third baseman connected on a pair of RBI triples one in the second and another in the fourth. He worked a bases-loaded walk in the the sixth when the Monsters broke open a 2-2 game with a three-run frame. He doubled and scored in the eighth as the Monsters opened an 8-2 lead. Nate Chase (Grand Valley State) finished 2-for-4 including his league-leading fifth home run. Chase drove in two and scored a pair of runs. Jonathan Catapano (Monroe CC) went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Dom Palma (Manhattan College) walked twice and scored twice. Zach Harter singled, walked and crossed home twice. Max Troiani (Bentley University) collected three RBI. Logan Martella-Tasick (Monroe CC) doubled, had two hits and scored one run. Donnie Moffat (St. Bonaventure) worked a scoreless inning and struck out two. Tanner Cooper (Finger Lakes CC) started and struck out six over five innings of work for the Monarchs.  Tommy Baxter (Dayton) had two hits including his first home run of the season – a solo shot in the fourth inning.  Ryan Kalbfus (Gannon) added his fourth round tripper of the summer. Stephen Kemp (Medaille) doubled and scored.
