LAKE MONSTERS 8 FLYING FISH 4
Kyle Povlock (RIT) and Tyler Smith (Niagara County CC) combined to throw 2-hit ball for five innings, and the Lake Monster offense took advantage of Flying Fish generosity to register a win in their opener. Povlock struck out six, walked one and faced one batter over the minimum through three innings to pick up the win. The right-hander tossed 52 pitches, 26 for strikes. After Sean Sheets (Keuka) reached on a leadoff error, Povlock struck out four straight. Smith worked two scoreless. He retired the side in order in the fourth and induced a double play to erase a leadoff single in the fifth. Max Troiani (Bentley) and Brian Linton (Johns Hopkins) both finished 2-for-3 on the night and paced a two-run fourth, but the Monsters capitalized on four walks and four wild pitches to score four runs in the third innings. Justin Augustine (Bethel), Jason Tisa (Wilkes), Colin Coykendall (Monroe CC) and Jonathan Catapano (Monroe CC) all walked and crossed home plate in the third. Catapano and Tisa scored twice in the game. Troiani doubled and Linton singled as the Monsters pushed their advantage to 6-0 in the fourth. Troiani collected an RBI with a single in the fifth. Billy Sanborn (Jefferson CC) brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. Michael Perlo (Cornell) singled and scored two in a four-run Flying Fish sixth. Sheets brought in another with a base hit. Nic Fiore (SUNY Fredonia) singled and scored a run. Christian Montanez started and threw two shutout frames to open the game for the Flying Fish.

Mike Sabatine (Maine) reached base all four times he came to the plate and sparked a decisive third inning as the Monarchs opened the season with a win. Sabatine finished 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored. The Section V Class AA Player of the Year opened the third with a stand-up triple, and the Monarchs broke open 4-4 game. Mike Magnanti (St. Bonaventure) went 2-for-3 with two run scored, and two RBI including bringing in Sabatine with a groundout. Cole Penders (Brockport College) highlighted the inning with a two-run double that one-hopped the fence in left center. Penders collected three RBI in the game. Raymond Specht (Niagara County CC) was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Brandon Henshaw (St. Bonaventure) had a single and an RBI. Jared Wren (St. John Fisher) started and fanned three over three innings to pick up the win. The right-hander allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits. Jason Wasilnak (St. John Fisher) let up one run on three hits over three innings. Dylan Hillabush (Niagara U) fanned four over three frames. Nic Fiore finished 3-for-3 with a triple and a run scored for the Flying Fish. Cody Cooper (Finger Lakes CC) went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Ben Martin (Brockport College) doubled, walked and scored a run.
