WEBSTER SCHROEDER 8
WEBSTER THOMAS 9
The beauty of baseball is that it’s not a timed event and no lead is too large to overcome. Tuesday afternoon, Webster Schroeder tested that axiom against Webster Thomas and nearly proved it correct. But the Titans held on for a 9-8 upset win against their cross-town rivals.
Thomas (8-6, 6-3) has been on a tear as of late riding a three-game winning streak. It raced off to a 9-0 lead after two innings as the Titans’ bats made contact early and often.
In their first at bat with two outs, four-consecutive singles by Damian Wright, Justin LaLoggia Jake Canfield and Derek Ogi and a Warrior fielding miscue led to a 3-0 lead. Then in the second, singles by Jim Marasco, Ryan Hill, LaLoggia, a triple by Canfield and another single by Ethan Maltman pushed the lead to a seemingly insurmountable 9-0 advantage.
But baseball is a game of endurance, not a sprint. Schroeder (10-5, 9-1) was just getting started in the top of the third.
With one out, Tommy Baxter started the comeback with a single, and, after Ben Conrow reached on an error, Jack Williard lined a single to right to score Baxter to break the ice. Tommy Winn then doubled in Conrow and Willard and it was 9-3. But the Warriors were not done. Alex Vogt drew a walk, Adam Chase reached on an error and Griffin Knight drove in both with a single to right, and he eventually scored when Andrew Hebert put the ball in play.
After three it was 9-6.
Things settled down for three innings as Thomas pitcher Jadon Masucci and Schroeder’s Ryan Bellavia dug in for a good old-fashioned pitchers’ duel. Neither team threatened during the third, fourth and fifth innings.
But in the top of the sixth, Schroeder eventually got to Masucci, putting runners on with a walk and an infield error. After a pitching change, Marasco took the mound and loaded the bases with another walk. Vogt then ripped a single to center to score Conrow and Willard, taking second on the play. It was 9-8 with Vogt on second when Marasco notched a called third strike on the Thomas batter.
In the bottom of the sixth, Hill and Mulcahy singled with no outs for Schroeder, but the Titan defense – specifically shortstop Baxter – snuffed out the threat. First Baxter fielded a grounder and threw out Hill at third then snared a line drive and doubled off Mulcahy at second on the ensuing play to end the inning.
But all the heroics and fireworks came to an abrupt end as Marasco needed just 6 pitches to send the Warriors down in order in the top of the seventh, prompting the Schroeder faithful to breathe a huge sigh of relief.
For the game, Thomas pounded out 12 hits – only Canfield’s triple the extra base hit. Hill, LaLoggia, Canfield and Ethan Maltman each had two hits, while LaLoggia and Canfield drove in two runs apiece. Masucci notched the win with Marasco saving the outcome.
Schroeder’s Baxter had two of his team’s 6 hits, while Winn, Vogt and Knight each had 2 RBI. Peter Smith took the loss. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak
SPENCERPORT 4
PENFIELD 9 (8)
The Penfield Patriots waited until extra innings to shut the door on Spencerport, as they scored 5 runs in the top of the eighth inning to prevail, 9-4 Tuesday afternoon.
Spencerport tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as Chris Carroll stole home with two outs. Carroll, who singled earlier in the inning, stole second and advanced to third before scoring on the most exiting play in baseball.
But Carroll’s heroics were overshadowed by a relentless Penfield (12-4, 7-2) attack in the top of the eighth. A bunt single by AJ Kimmins, a sacrifice fly RBI by Danny Stapleton, a two-run double by Brendan Miller and an RBI double by Patrick Bowes turned turned a tight game into a 9-4 lead. Penfield pitcher Brendan Miller closed the game out in the bottom of the eighth.
Penfield built its 4-0 lead by scoring on an error in the first, an RBI single by Tim Nichols in the second, and consecutive RBI singles by Miller and Connor Stuewe in the fourth. The Rangers (3-14, 2-8) answered in bottom of the fourth when Gino Pellett homered to left to score Joe Moschettieri to cut the lead in half. Then in fifth Spencerport pulled to within one at 4-3 as Carroll scored on an error, setting up Carroll’s theft in the seventh to force extra innings.
Miller earned the win for the Patriots, allowing just 2 hits over the last 3.1 innings, while Nathan Heuber took the loss for the Patriots.

The Saints cut the lead to 6-3 when Ryan Demitrovic stole home and John Bagley drove in Michael Mule. But that was as close as CC would come. R-H put the game out of reach with a run in the sixth on run-scoring single by Pat Sherron, then three more in the seventh on a bases loaded triple by Specht.
