Andrew MacWilliam, by far the Rochester Americans’ most physical presence, has been suspended for three games by the American Hockey League as a result of his actions on Saturday night.
He will miss Game 3 of the first-round Calder Cup playoff series against the Syracuse Crunch on Wednesday night in Rochester. The Crunch lead the best-of-five series 2-0. If the Amerks manage to stay alive with a victory, he’ll also miss Game 4 on Friday in Rochester and, if necessary, Game 5 on Saturday at Syracuse.
MacWilliam had left the ice and headed down the walkway to the dressing room following the end of the second period, then returned to join a scrum. Rules prohibit a player who has left the ice from returning to participate in an altercation.
No penalties were assessed by referees Chris Brown or Mackenzie Nichol during the incident.
If the Amerks don’t play at least three games this spring, his suspension will carry over to the start of the 2018-19 regular season.
