Weather cut a swathe into the local high school (and Triple-A for that matter) baseball schedule over the past seven days. That didn’t stop a few Section V squads from getting a jump start on the season while spending time south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
The Penfield Patriots ended their spring break trip with a 3-1 mark including a dramatic win in extra innings to close the week. Andrew Ebersol turned in the third strong starting pitching performance of the week for Nick Marcin’s Patriots. Ebersol allowed one run on six hits over six-and-a-third innings of work. The senior hurler fanned 11 and walked none. Gage Ziehl made a game-saving play at third in the bottom of the seventh going to his backhand to take away a sure hit down the line with winning run in scoring position. The freshman led the top of the eighth with a double and scored as Penfield went on to win, 4-1. Ziehl started and set down five on strikes over 4.2 innings in Penfield’s 10-3 win over West Seneca East (VI) in the season opener. Ziehl finished 2-for-3 with double and three runs scored in the opener. Ben Harrison surrendered one hit over six innings in Penfield’s 10-0 win over Notre Dame (WVA) on Thursday. The junior struck out three without a walk.
WE DIDN’T FORGET ABOUT …
McQuaid Jesuit Knights – The reigning Class AA champs and NYS semi-finalists went 5-1 on their trip to Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida. Erik Johnson and Ryan O’Mara both turned in complete-game outings for the Jesuit Knights. O’Mara scattered four hits, fanned six and walked none in a 4-0 win over Johnson Central. Johnson allowed one run on six hits in a 4-1 win over Marion County (OH). The senior left-hander struck out 10 without a walk. Hunter Walsh hurled six scoreless in a 7-0 win over West Jessamine. Batting out of the two-hole, Ben Beauchamp collected four multi-hit games and scored eight runs and drove in four.
Canandaigua Braves – Dale Werth’s club only logged only one game, but the Braves made the most of it pulling out 5-4 win at Irondequoit. Playing without 2017 First Team All-County selection Seth Vigneri, Canandaigua held off a late Irondequoit rally for a win in the season opener for both teams. Junior Mike Sculli fanned 11 over 4.2 innings of work, and Connor Fisher picked up the win in relief hurling two-and-a-third scoreless. Fisher also delivered the game-winning RBI in the sixth. Jordie Johnstone finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored.
