PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.— The College at Brockport baseball team swept Plattsburgh State on Saturday after a pair of impressive victories. The Green and Gold showed that they are an all-around team as they displayed strong pitching with dangerous hitting. With the fifth straight win, the team sits at 10-9 on the year and 5-3 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The Cardinals continue to struggle, falling to 6-12 on the season and 1-8 in conference competition.
Game 1: Won, 4-0
The Golden Eagles dominated the Cardinals in the first game, starting with a 7.0 complete game by Sam McCumiskey. He allowed only three hits and struck out six batters, while walking one. The offense was held in check for the first three innings but came alive in the fourth. Lou Miceli recorded the team’s first hit with a single up the middle and advance to second base on a passed ball. He came across to score after Liam O’Leary doubled to right field.
The big hit was off the bat of Tom Kretzler in the fifth inning, after a walk by Nicholas Pastore and double by Avery Brooks, set him up for an important at-bat. The outfielder drove a ball to right field to bring in the base runners and extend the lead to 3-0. The Golden Eagles added another run in the fifth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Justin Valentino. McCumiskey ended the game retiring 12 straight batters.
Game 2: Won, 7-2
The Green and Gold fell behind in the first inning after a wild pitch, but they responded starting pitcher Mark Giallanzo minimized the damaged. Brooks tied the game in the fifth inning, singling to right field again and that allowed Charlie Serino to come around to score. The opposition added a run in the bottom of the inning, but Brockport did not allow that to get in their way.
Serino started a two-out rally in the seventh with a single to right center and Drew DeBlasiis reached on an error. Brooks took advantage of the opportunity and doubled to right field to bring in the tying run. Kretzler had another clutch hit on the day, driving a double down the line to bring in Brooks and DeBlasiis. Eaton continued to the two-out success with a single that drove in the fifth run of the game. The Green and Gold added another pair of runs in the ninth inning and won the game 7-2.
Giallanzo earned the win going 6.0 IP, allowing two runs on three hits and struck out two. Chris Cramerrecorded the save after pitching the remaining 3.0 innings. He did not allow a run on three hits.
Brockport travels to St. John Fisher on Wednesday, April 4 for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup.
