Irondequoit and Wayne to meet for spot in regional

For the third time in 12 months the Irondequoit Eagles and Wayne Eagles will tip off against each other. Like their first meeting, a trip to the NYS Far West Regional is at stake. Irondequoit has taken the last two meetings. Here is the breakdown for Wednesday’s matchup:

What: Class A NYS Far West Regional Qualifier

Who: Section V Class A1 champion Irondequoit (20-3/Monroe County Division II) vs. Section V Class A2 champion Wayne (20-3/Finger Lakes East).

When: Wednesday, March 7, 8:15 PM

Where: Rush-Henrietta High School

How they got here: Irondequoit defeated Spencerport, 72-37 in the A1 quarter-finals and Pittsford Sutherland 56-48 in the semi-finals. The Eagles beat Athena, 58-51 to take their second straight sectional title.

Wayne beat Monroe, 63-53 in the A2 quarter-finals and HF-L, 36-25 in the semi-finals. The Eagles outlasted NE Douglass, 57-54 to win their second straight Class A2 crown.

What’s at stake: The winner will meet West Seneca West (VI) in Saturday’s Far West Regional. A 7 PM start is scheduled for Saturday at Buffalo State College.

History 101: Irondequoit beat Wayne in last year’s regional qualifier, 56-36 on the way to the school’s first New York State title. Wayne’s 2017 Section V Class A2 championship was the first in program history. Irondequoit has won three titles in the past seven years after going more than six decades between sectional championships. Gerald Drumgoole netted a game-high 28 points when Irondequoit beat Wayne, 60-50 earlier this season.

Trends: Irondequoit has won 17 of 18. Wayne has won seven of eight. Irondequoit scored 65.2 points per game during the season while allowing 48.7. Wayne’s offense accounted for 55.7 points per game. Their defense held teams to 43.2 points. Irondequoit is ranked No. 7 NYSSWA, Wayne, No. 25.

Players to watch for Irondequoit: Gerald Drumgoole Jr. G 21.5 ppg, Frederick June, Jr. Jr. G 8.9 ppg, Josh Stenglein Jr. G 9.6 ppg and Patrick Thomas Jr. F 12.3 ppg.

For Wayne: Logan Blankenberg Jr. G 17.0 ppg/8.0 rpg, Nick Carmichael Jr. F 14.0 ppg/7.0 rpg, Billy Thomson Jr. G 8.0 ppg, 6.0 apg, 3.0 spg and Braeden Zenelovic Sr. F 12.0 ppg/7.0 rpg.
