Section V Roundup: NE Douglass pulls upset; top seeds in A1 advance

CLASS A1

No. 1 GREECE ATHENA 70
No. 4 PITTSFORD MENDON 61
Nigel Scantlebury led four in double figures with 19 points, and Greece Athena (20-2) advanced to the finals for a sixth straight year. Scantlebury netted 10 in the second quarter to help the Trojans take a 35-33 edge into halftime. Teammate Christian Jones scored 16. Johnny Salone had 14, and Patrick Meisenzahl added 10 for the Trojans. Ryan Kubanka chipped in with seven points. Kelvin Reaves had four. Daniel Cook paced Mendon (17-5) with 20 points. Senior Matt Powers added 19. Connor Krapf and Jacob Shadders scored 11 apiece for the Vikings. The teams split a pair of regular season games.

No. 3 PITTSFORD SUTHERLAND 48
Robert Diaz-Judson scored six of his team-high 14 points in the third quarter as defending champion Irondequoit (19-3) erased a halftime deficit. Gerald Drumgoole converted eight of 12 free throws and finished with 12 points. Drumgoole’s biggest contribution, though, came on the defensive end of the floor where the junior guard held Sutherland’s Kevin Ryan to four points in the second half. Ryan scored 11 of his game-high 15 points to pace Sutherland to a 28-23 lead going into halftime. Frederick June Jr. scored 10 points for Irondequoit. Ben DiGiovanni and Craig Rosen had 10 points apiece for Sutherland (18-4). Rosen connected three times behind the arc.  Irondequoit advances to face Greece Athena in the A1 championship. This will be the sixth time in the last 14 years the two schools have met in the finals. Other scorers — Irondequoit — Patrick Thomas (9), Josh Stenglein (7), Tanner Pioch (4). Pittsford-Sutherland — Matt Thaney (7), Chris Cox (4), Graham Schild (2).

Adonis Flagler scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter to lead NE Douglass to its first championship game appearance in program history. READ MORE.

No. 6 HONEOYE FALLS-LIMA 25
Despite struggling with foul trouble, the reigning champion Wayne Eagles used a 16-4 run to close the game, and advance to the Section V Class A2 championship. READ MORE.
