Familiar foes meet in A2 quarter-finals

Section Five’s Class A2 quarter-finals bring together divisional rivals in three tilts with a rematch from last year’s semi-finals on tap in the fourth contest. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 seed LEADERSHIP ACADEMY (17-3) VS. No. 9 seed EAST HIGH (7-13)

When: Saturday/ 6:30 PM
Where: School #33

Leadership Academy defeated East High twice (63-54/90-71) on its way to grabbing a share of the RCAC Division A title. Leadership opened the season with 12 straight wins but have dropped two of three entering sectionals. The Lions earned a No. 1 seed last year before falling in the quarter-finals to No. 8 seed Wilson Magnet in this same quarter-finals. East High is making its first appearance at the A2 level. East reached the A1 semi-finals a year ago. The Eagles won three straight and four of five during the middle of the season but dropped three in a row to end the regular season before beating SOTA to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal.

Players to Watch: Leadership – Davon Brown Sr. F 14.9 ppg), Dezmere Ellis Sr. G 17.9 ppg) and Rondell Watson Jr. G 21.8 ppg). East High – Maurice Coney III Jr. G 10.1 ppg, Kni Jear Sapp Jr. F 10.1 ppg and Chaz Washington Jr. G 18.5 ppg.

No. 2 seed WAYNE (17-3) vs. No. 7 seed MONROE (12-9)

When: Saturday/7:00 PM
Where: Wayne High School

Last time these two teams met was in the 2017 Class A2 semi-finals. Wayne outlasted Monroe, 53-49 on went to claim the program’s first sectional titles. Wayne returns its starting five from that squads. The Eagles won 13 straight games this season and claimed the program’s first Finger Lakes East title. Monroe toppled Leadership late in the season to claim a share of the RCAC Division A crown. Players to Watch: Wayne – Logan Blankenberg Jr. G 17.0 ppg/8.0 rpg, Nick Carmichael Jr. F 14.0 ppg/7.0 rpg and Braeden Zenelovic Sr. F 12.0 ppg/7.0 rpg. Monroe – Chris Gibson, Jr. Sr. F 16.4 ppg, Tyquil Glasgow Jr. F 12.6 ppg and Devante Mateo Jr. G 11.2 ppg.

No. 3 BATAVIA (14-6) vs. No. 6 HONEOYE FALLS-LIMA (14-7)

When: Saturday/4:00 PM
Where: Batavia

These Monroe County Division IV rivals split a pair of games this season with both winning on their own courts. HF-L taking a 64-59 decision, and Batavia avenging that with a 63-53 victory. HF-L won six of seven late in the season and claimed the program’s first Monroe County league title. went on to claim the division crown. Batavia brings an eight-game win streak into the contest.

Players to Know: Batavia – TeeSean Ayala Sr. G 14.8 ppg, Mason McFollins Jr. G 14.5 ppg and Antwan Odom Jr. G 15.4 ppg. Honeoye Falls-Lima – Dan Hayes Sr. F 18.5 ppg, Owen VanNewkirk Sr. F  10.8 ppg and Tyler Selke Sr. G 10.8 ppg.

No. 4 seed NE DOUGLASS (13-7) VS. No. 5 seed WILSON MAGNET (13-7)

Where: School #33

Wilson Magnet swept NE Douglass (69-57/61-59) and went undefeated in RCAC Division B. Wilson reached the Class A2 finals last year for the second straight time. The Wildcats have won seven of their last eight. NE Douglass brings a three-game win streak into sectionals.

Players to Watch: NE Douglass – Adonis Flagler So. G/F 12.4 ppg, Lamar Lovelace So. G 9.0 ppg and Jiahmere Mitchell Jr. G 23.4 ppg) Wilson – Brennan Clark So. F 14.6 ppg, Robert Davis Jr. G 23.6 ppg and Desi Floyd Jr. F 12.6 ppg).
