A look at some notable performances from January 22nd – February 3rd when yours truly has been on hand at games.
Davon Brown 6-foot-4, Sr. F Leadership Academy for Young Men (RCAC) – Evolved into an inside/outside threat in the off-season, and Leadership Academy is reaping the rewards, showed last year that he can dominate in the paint, has proven this year he can step outside and produce while making keen decisions when to get underneath the basket, proficient finisher with either hand in traffic, has a soft touch which he shows on the perimeter, efficient footwork in pick-and-pop as well as pick-and-roll situations, strong hands, has to be guarded beyond the 3-point arc; ferocious rebounder with a knack for getting two hands on the ball, on the defensive end he possesses the innate ability to find outlets and get the Lions in transition; can guard 2-5 without giving up much on smaller ball handlers as well as larger post players, disciplined shot blocker who doesn’t over commit.
Anthony Iglesia 5-foot-7 Sr. G McQuaid Jesuit Knights (RCAC) – Arguably the best balance of hands in Section V combined with a killer instinct, routinely gets taller opponents in the air and makes sound decisions when defense is out of position, above average court vision with a knack for getting the ball to teammates in spots where they can score, at the same time he knows when to become the scorer, outstanding footwork both offensively and defensively, uses low center of gravity to his ultimate advantage, possesses the ability to stay elevated for extended periods which allows him to compensate for his lack of height as he gets opponents in the air and glides past them; anticipates well on the defensive end, sees one play ahead, pesky on-the-ball defender who regularly forces the ball handler to turn his back to the basket, reads passing lanes well; while not a threat to dominate on the boards opponents have to account for him while the ball is in the air, almost always seems to be in the right place for long rebounds.

Luke Insley 5-foot-8, Fr. G Webster Schroeder Warriors (Monroe County Division II) – He’s too young to know of Paul Newman legend, but Insley is a “Cool Hand,” need to remind oneself that he is only a freshman, makes effective use of the dribble to create shots or passes, impressive range with discipline, rarely takes unwarranted shots, wants the ball in end-of-game situations and is not afraid to take the last shot … and can deliver in those opportunities; disciplined defender who doesn’t over commit, uses fundamental footwork to contain opposing ball handlers, moves on flight in off-the-ball situations; active and disciplined rebounder who is responsible when the ball is in the air.
Ryan Kubanka 6-foot-5 Sr. F Greece Athena Trojans (Monroe County Division III) – Keeps it simple and plays with a chip on his shoulder, has the ability to dominate in the paint but stays within structure of team offense, is close to automatic when catching in drive-and-dish situations, effective at the high post as facilitator/jump shooter and has a flair for taking it to the rack, has developed into a 3-point threat that can be overwhelming for opposing defenses when considering the abilities of his teammates; aggressive rebounder who always gets a hand on the ball, makes weight-room plays in traffic, proficient distributor in rebound-and-outlet situations; intimidating defender who rises to the challenge.
Jakhi Lucas 5-foot-8 Jr. G UPrep Griffins (Private/Independent) – Gets downhill quickly and is perhaps Section V’s best decision maker in open-floor situations, thrives on contact, can finish with either hand in traffic, tremendous sense of balance, above-average court vision, can fill it up from behind the arc, keeps defenders off balance with the ability to drive in half-court situations, underrated mid-range; outstanding defender who guards 1-4, disciplined enough in on-the-ball situations to contain ball handler, makes sound decisions off the ball as when to gamble and get in passing lanes; a ball getter in rebounding situations, sheds initial contact from opponents and finds openings for carom opportunities.
