A look at some of the notable performances from January 15th-January 21st when yours truly has been on hand at games.
Eric Carter 6-foot-2 Sr. G Aquinas Li’l Irish (Private/Independent) -Scrappy ball handler who does a little bit of everything, has found his niche as a tireless defender who gets on the floor for a loose ball, can defend 1-4 and makes seamless switch on ball screens; daring offensive player, at his best making decisions in the transition, does not need a ball screen to get to the basket, thrives on contact, finishes in traffic; aggressive rebounder who tracks down long caroms, makes quick transition from defense to offense.
Robert Davis 5-foot-7 Jr. G Wilson Magnet Wildcats (RCAC) – Elite level scorer who can connect from anywhere on the floor, has to be guarded beyond the 3-point arc, foot speed and low center of gravity makes pull-up jumper deadly, quick release, gets impressive elevation and can shoot over taller players, proficient in the open floor, gets downhill quickly, makes keen decisions and adjustments in transition, can finish with either hand in traffic; underrated defender who sees one pass/play ahead, anticipates well, fights through screens without fouling, ready to move; tireless rebounder who reads long caroms well.; high basketball IQ.
Tristian Flowers 6-foot-3 Sr. F Edison Tech Inventors (RCAC) – Developing interior player who gets superior elevation on left-handed jump hook which he finishes with consistency, strong hands, catches well in traffic, reads defensive pressure from back side, proficient court vision combined with deft passing touch, runs the floor well; slippery rebounder who sheds initial contact, keeps feet in constant motion; active defender, is responsible on ball screens, length creates obstruction for opposing players.
Tray Roberts 5-foot-9 Sr. G Northstar Christian Knights (Private/Independent) – Aggressive offensive player, supremely confident, thrives on contact and uses it for leverage, has to be defended beyond the 3-point arc, quick first step and impressive balance make him a threat off the dribble; active rebounder, stays in motion while ball is in the air, difficult to keep him in check; gambling defensive player who gets in passing lanes, has foot speed to compensate and get back in play.
Josh Stenglein 6-foot-2 Jr. G Irondequoit Eagles (Monroe County Division II) – Smooth-shooting perimeter player, repeatable motion, quick release, reads defenses well and moves without the ball, sees gaps in the defenses, lengthy frame makes its difficult for opposing guards to disrupt his shot, keeps it simple off the dribble, catches well and can finish in transition; responsible defender, plays angles well, understands the purpose of containment within structure of team defense; active rebounder, plays the body well.
