ROCHESTER, N.Y. — For their first 12 possessions of Saturday’s third quarter – a stretch lasting nearly six minutes – the Northstar Christian Academy boys basketball team managed just one field goal.
It was fitting that Miles Brown brought the drought to an end. The junior guard, who was named first team All-State a season ago, closed the quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers on his way to a 38-point performance as the Knights defeated the Corning Hawks (IV), 70-59 in the 2017 Bishop Kearney Christmas Showcase.
“It’s great when you have a player like Miles because when the shots aren’t falling that normally would with some of other guys I can always go ‘hey Miles let’s a get up a good shot for us,’ and he does,” Northstar coach JJ Garwood said. “It’s a luxury.”
Ryan Garwood opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back three-pointers. Daniel Pickett hit both ends of one-and-one free throws. Brown drove the lane and scored over 6-foot-6 Myles Bankston.
Brown followed that and connected on his sixth 3-pointer of the game to give Northstar its largest lead of the day at 59-46.
In a game where Northstar only trailed at 3-0, the Knights took a five-point advantage into halftime before their shooting touch abandoned them.
Garwood called a timeout with 3:57 remaining in the quarter and Northstar leading 33-33.
Corning moved within two when Myles Bankston completed a traditional 3-point play. Two possessions later Brown converted a pair of free throws.
“I couldn’t complain about the shots we were getting,” Harwood said about the discussion during the timeout. “We just had to make shots. I told my shooters I trust them. ‘If you think you got a good shot, your feet are set, take it.’ That paid off later in the third and the beginning of the fourth.”

Brown finished with 10 rebounds and five assists.
Matthew Medeiros hit three 3-pointers and finished with nine. Brown’s twin brother, Mike, scored eight points.
Bankston led Corning with 20. Jason Rodriguez hit a pair of treys and added 13 for the Hawks.
Northstar improved to 3-0 on the season.
