Section V set to host Far West Regionals this weekend

Last year four Section V teams advanced to the New York State semi-finals. One year later, World of Inquiry is the only school to earn a repeat trip to state quarter-finals, and the Griffins will be looking to advance in a new classification.

A trip to Middletown, New York and the state semi-finals is at stake when Section V representatives McQuaid Jesuit (Class AA), Pittsford Sutherland (A), World of Inquiry (B), Byron-Bergen/Elba (C) and Mount Morris (D) take the field this weekend in the Far West Regionals at Spencerport Central Schools.

Here are the matchups:

Class D Friday 5 p.m.
Lafayette (3-15-0*/No. 11 NYSSSWA) vs. Mount Morris (17-2-2/No. 5 NYSSWA)

How they arrived here: Lafayette beat North Collins in the Section VI Class D semi-finals, 6-1 and Pine Valley 7-2 in the finals.

Mount Morris opened the Section V Class D championships with a 4-1 win over Fillmore beating Wheatland-Chili 3-2 in the semi-finals and Jasper-Troupsburg 2-0 in the finals. The Blue Devils knocked off Belfast, 2-0 in the regional qualifier.

Class A Friday 7:30 p.m.
East Aurora (20-0-0/No. 2 NYSSWA) vs. Pittsford Sutherland (11-7-2/ No. 13 NYSSWA)

How they arrived here: East Aurora opened the Section VI A2 championships with a 4-0 win over Amherst before knocking off Lewiston-Porter, 4-0 in the semi-finals and Starpoint 6-0 in the finals. East Aurora advanced to the regionals beating Grand Island 4-3 in overtime.

Sutherland beat Geneva, 6-0 in Section V’s first round. The Knights then handled Wayne, 2-0 and three-time reigning sectional champ HF-L, 2-0 before advancing on penalty kicks over Brockport.

Class C Saturday 2:30 p.m.
Allegany-Limestone (18-1-0/No. 3 NYSSWA) vs. Byron-Bergen/Elba (18-1-1/No. 1 NYSWWA)

How they arrived here: Allegany-Limestone romped to 9-0 win over Randolph in the Section VI Class C opener and went on to beat Holland, 6-1 and Westfield-Brocton, 5-0.

Byron Bergen-Elba beat Gananda in the Section V Class C1 quarter-finals, Sodus, 1-0 in the semis and Williamson, 2-0 in the finals. The Bees edged Bishop Kearney, 1-0 in overtime in the regional qualifier.

Class B Saturday 5:00 p.m.
Lackawanna (18-2-0/No. 7 NYSSWA) vs. World of Inquiry (14-5-0/No. 11 NYSSWA)

How they arrived here: Lackawanna defeated Tonowanda in the Section VI Class B1 opener followed by wins over Olean, 2-1 and International Prep, 4-3. The Steelers cruised past Riverside, 4-1 in the regional qualifier.

World of Inquiry, which moved up a classification after taking the past three Section V Class C1 titles, the B2 championship with a 7-0 drubbing of Penn Yan followed by a 3-1 win over Letchworth/Warsaw and a 2-1 win in overtime over Bath-Haverling. The Griffins breezed past six-time Section V champion Livonia, 5-0 in the regional qualifier.

Class AA Saturday 7:30 p.m.
Clarence (17-1-1/No. 2 NYSSWA) vs. McQuaid Jesuit (19-0-0/No. 1 NYSSWA)

How they arrived here: Clarence shut out Niagara Falls 10-0 in the Section VI Class AA quarter-finals. The Red Devils advanced to beat Orchard Park, 2-1 and completed a season sweep of Williamsville-North, with a 2-0 win in the finals.

McQuaid opened Section V’s post-season with a 6-0 win over Gates-Chili before edging Webster Thomas 1-0 in the semis and Hilton 2-1 in the finals.

World of Inquiry advanced to the Class C state finals in 2016 before falling in double overtime to North Salem in double overtime, 2-1. It was the program’s second loss in the state title game in three years. Fairport (AA) also advanced out of the Far West Region in 2016. The Red Raiders eventually lost the state title game for the third time in four years.  Livonia reached the Class B state semi-finals, and Alfred-Almond claimed the Class D state title.
