PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men’s soccer team defeated Alfred University 3-1 to give the Cardinals the #4 seed in next weekend’s Empire 8 Championship tournament. Fisher finishes the regular season with an 8-5-4 overall record, and a 3-3-1 Empire 8 standing. Alfred finishes its 2017 campaign with a 4-11-1 record, while sitting at 3-3-1 in the conference.
The Cardinals jumped out in front first in the 13th minute when Joe Balls sent a ball to Jeff Meyers who volleyed a ball up, just missing left, hitting the post, however, Meyers was there to collect his own rebound and strike the ball into the net.
Alfred would fire an equalizer with four a half minutes remaining in the half, when a Saxon player ripped a ball from about 15 yards out, ricocheting off another player and finding the back of the net in the lower left corner.
Fisher would finish the first half with the 9-6 shooting edge over the Saxons. Meyers and Glenn Roschetzky both attempted two shots apiece.
The first 20 minutes of play in the second half was dominated by Alfred, holding Fisher to a single shot. However, in the 65th minute, the Cardinals would be awarded a free kick from about 15 yards out. Justin Ferron would take the kick which would be blocked by a wall of Alfred opponents. Eventually Ferron would gather the ball and strike it again, finding the head of Justen Polk, who would net his fifth goal of the season, putting the Cardinals on top 2-1.
The Cardinals would cash in for an insurance goal about eight minutes later when Fisher would be awarded another free kick. Ferron would take this one himself, sending a rocket into the back of the net from 20 yards out.
The three goals would be enough for Fisher, as they would go on to top the Saxons, 3-1 at the completion of the game.
The Cardinals would finish outshooting the Saxons, 21-13. Meyers would lead the charge firing four shots on the day, while Ferron, Roschetzky, Polk, Michael Piccarreto and Bryan Rollins would all finish with two apiece.
Joe Catalfamo would pick up the win, playing a stellar game at goalkeeper for the Cardinals, picking up four total saves over 90 minutes of play.
Fisher will travel to Hoboken next weekend for the Empire 8 Conference Championship tournament, playing at 7 p.m. on Friday against the hosting Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks.
