PITTSBURGH – The women’s soccer team at the University of Rochester has stood tall against some of the nation’s finest teams on a yearly basis and the Yellowjackets were up to the challenge again on Sunday in a match at ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University.
CMU was rolling: an 11-2-2 mark (3-1-1 in the University Athletic Association) coming into the match. Rochester was coming off its first UAA win of the year, 3-0, at Case Western Reserve University on Friday evening.
Rochester kept CMU off the scoreboard for just over 86 minutes before the hosts broke through for a goal and a 1-0 victory.
The best Yellowjacket chance of the opening 45 minutes came from Nicolette Kober. She fired at goal but the ball sailed wide. That came only four minutes after a sharp reaction and save from Rochester goalkeeper Emma Campbell. CMU’s Sienna Stritter fired a blast that Campbell knocked down, then smothered before any home shirts could reach it.
Early in the second half, Carnegie’s Katie Strycharz shot from inside the penalty area, but the ball was straight at Campbell. She finished with six saves.
UR’s Pamela Chan tried a low shot from the center of the box which was scooped up by CMU goalie Carolyn Botz (two saves) in the 65th minute.
Taylor Cammarata had her shoot blocked in the 72nd minute while in the 81st minute, Emery Noll hit one through traffic from 20 yards out, but Campbell was in perfect position to save it.
CMU finally broke through at 86:17. Grant Wilmer raced to the corner of the penalty area and sent a lateral pass to Haili Adams near the penalty spot. Adams took a touch back to her right and with the Rochester defense moving to the left to prevent a cross-goal shot at the far post, Adams drove it into the upper right corner of the net.
Rochester is 7-8-1 overall now, 1-5 in the UAA. The Yellowjackets are idle until Saturday when they wrap up the regular season at Emory University.
