GENESEO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men’s soccer team fell this evening to SUNY Geneseo in non-conference play, 1-0. With one regular season game to play, Fisher stands at 7-5-4 overall while Geneseo moves to 8-7-2 in its 2017 campaign.
The first half was all defense for both teams as the Cardinals and Knights went into the half knotted at zero. Geneseo would hold the 9-2 shooting edge over Fisher in the first half.
Jeff Meyers and Zachary Munski fired the two shot attempts for Fisher. Joe Catalfamo tallied five saves in the first 45 minutes of play to preserve the halftime shutout.
Fisher would be undone in the 60th minute of play when a ball was deflected and shot by a Geneseo player from about 18 yards out, finding the back of the net in the left corner of the goal.
The Cardinals came close to tying the game at one when Joe Balls ripped a shot with a little over five minutes left in the contest, with the ball sailing just high of the net.
Fisher would finish with seven total shots on the day, with seven different Cardinals taking a shot.
Catalfamo would take the loss in net, stopping six Geneseo shots over 57:22 minutes of play. Szymon Labecki would come in to relieve Catalfamo, totaling three saves over the final 32 and half minutes in the contest.
The Cardinals look to earn their spot in the post season, playing at 7 p.m. on Saturday in an Empire 8 battle with Alfred University on senior night under the lights of Growney Stadium.
