Familiar foes vie for A1

The seeds have changed; the teams have not. One year later, Class A1 has the same Final Four participants. Familiarity should make for great theatre.

No. 1 seed Brighton (14-2-0) vs. No. 4 seed Greece Athena (9-6-2)

How they got here: Brighton beat No. 9 seed Canandaigua, 2-0 while Athena defeated fifth-seeded Pittsford-Mendon, 4-0.

Season series: Brighton took both meetings between the Monroe County Division III rivals winning on the road 4-2, September 5th and taking the rematch 2-1 on September 28th.

Names to know: Brighton – Gabriel Barraclough-Tan (nine goals, three assists), Caio De Medeiros (three goals, six assists), Lucas De Medeiros (0.741 GAA/seventh Section V), Felipe Haunch (14 goals, nine assists), Connor McQuillan (five goals, five assists), Matt Ochs (two goals, four assists) and Sagar Sharma (three goals, five assists).

Othman Belhseine (11 goals, five assists), Ryan Burns (Jr. defender), Ryan Fiannaca (three goals, one assist), Anthony Loiacono (three goals, seven assists), Michael Monti (0.771 GAA- 10th Section V), Ryan Papke (two goals, one assist), Dylan Rice (eight goals, six assists), Jean-Mark Sankara (two goals, one assist), Robert Stirrup (Sr. midfielder), CJ Takatch (13 goals, five assists) and Trevor Talone (two goals, one assist).

Coaches: Adam Hiller (Brighton), Mike Butler (Athena).

History 101: Athena has won the last three A1 titles. Brighton took the 2011 A crown and the 2012 A1 title. Athena beat Brighton, 3-1 in the 2015 A1 quarter-finals. Athena won the title as a No. 2 seed last year. As an eight-seed Brighton advanced to the semis and lost 3-0 to Arcadia in the 2016 semi-final.

No. 2 seed Brockport (14-2-1) vs. No. 3 seed Greece Arcadia (11-3-3)

How they got here: Brockport defeated No. 10 seed Irondequoit, 4-0. Arcadia dispatched of sixth-seeded Eastridge, 6-0.

Names to know: Brockport – Tyler Daly (four goals, two assists), Vander Hart (three goals, six assists), Zachary Langelotti (15 goals, six assists), Ben Leach (six goals, 10 assists), Michael Rennie (one goal, six assists), Peyton Young (1.183 GAA), Colby Wharram (six goals, one assist) and Zach Wharram (15 goals, nine assists).

Arcadia – Chris Collili (seven goals, six assists), Denis Danilenko (three goals), Carter Englert (two goals, one assist), Joe Esposito (.099 GAA), Ryan Karker (two goals, four assists), Tyler Lewandowski (20 goals, six assists), Cameron Misiurewicz (three goals, eight assists), Cooper LaValley (three goals, six assists).

Coaches: Chris Zorn (Brockport), Matt Vergamini (Arcadia)

History 101: Brockport is looking for its first sectional title since it claimed back-to-back championships in 2005 and 2006. Arcadia advanced to last year’s final but hasn’t won a sectional championship since 1993. Brockport was the No. 3 seed last year and lost to Athena, 3-2 in the semi-finals. Arcadia earned a No. 4 seed in 2016 before falling to Athena, 3-1 in the title game. Canandaigua was the 2016 Class A1 No. 1 seed.

A 7:30 p.m. start time on Tuesday is slated at Spenerport.
