LOS ANGELES DODGERS (4-1) 11
CHICAGO CUBS (1-4) 1
CHICAGO, IL– Enrique Hernandez smacked three home runs and knocked in seven RBI for the Dodgers, the first home runs and RBI of his postseason career. Clayton Kershaw pitched six innings for the Dodgers, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Kenta Maeda, Brandon Morrow and Kenley Jansen held Cubs scoreless over the last three innings, giving up one hit, fanning five, and the Los Angeles Dodgers won the National League pennant.
Hernandez tied Troy O’Leary, John Valentin, Mo Vaughn and Edgar Martinez for the most RBI in a postseason game, as well as the postseason record for home runs in a game. He also became the third player this postseason to hit a grand slam.
Hernandez wasted no time getting his offense going for the Dodgers, hitting home runs on the first two pitches he saw in the game. The first, which traveled 399 feet to centerfield, came on a first-pitch fastball in the lower half of the zone. The second, a 390-foot grand slam, saw Hernandez catch a slider and send it over the right field wall. In the top of the ninth inning, Hernandez hit his third home run, working a 2-0 count and squaring up a fastball, driving it to left-centerfield for a 370-foot shot.
The Dodgers claimed their 22nd National League pennant in franchise history, sending them to the World Series. The team’s last trip was in 1988, which ended with a Dodger championship victory over the Oakland A’s in five games. They now await the winner of the Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees American League Championship Series.
