ROCHESTER, N.Y. – New York University scored both of its goals in the second half – one early, then one in the last eight minutes to clinch it – in a 2-0 women’s soccer victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The win keeps the Violets in the thick of the University Athletic Association race. NYU is 8-3-2 overall, 2-1-1 in the UAA. Rochester is 6-6-1, 0-4 in the UAA.
Isabelle Turner scored in the 49th minute to snap a 0-0 tie and Tori Bianco added the second goal in the 82nd minute.
Sophia Danielson picked up the shutout win. Nolani Ogawa saved a ball off the line midway through the first half to keep it at 0-0.
Madilynne Lee and Emma Campbell split time in goal for Rochester. Lee started on Senior Day and played the first half. Campbell came on at halftime. She left in the last five minutes with Lee returning to goal.
Hannah Geitner had a save off the line for Rochester in the first half. It was the first dangerous chance for either team and it came just 10 minutes in. The Violets earned a corner kick at the left attacking end. Alex Benedict hit a low drive on the corner, trying to sneak it inside the near post, but Geitner was there to drive it away for a second corner kick which was harmless.
A minute later, with NYU pressure in the area, Turner tried to flick the ball behind her and inside the left post but it skipped barely wide.
Rochester’s first good chance was midway through period one. Hayley Orciuch drove a ball from the top of the box towards the left side. It was cleared at the base of the post, awarding corner. Paige Gloster‘s header a minute later was cleared from the line by Ogawa.
The second half was less than four minutes old when NYU jumped ahead. Charlotte Herbertz ran down a long ball on right wing. She centered it to Benedict at the far post and Benedict turned it back into the middle where Turner was there to touch it home for the 1-0 lead.
Gloster, in search of an equalizer, nearly got one from a very long distance. She ran down a long ball on the right side, pivoted, and hit a long, dangerous ball towards the upper left corner of the net, but it was just wide with 33 minutes left.
In the last eight minutes, Bianco made it 2-0, finishing off a passing combination, collecting a pass from Ashlyn Krygowski, and driving it into the low right side for the final margin.
