PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Visiting Nazareth used extra time Saturday to prevail over St. John Fisher in a key Empire 8 men’s soccer match at Fisher’s Growney Stadium. Freshman Josh Crespo‘s scored the game’s only goal with less than three minutes left in the first overtime for a 1-0 Golden Flyer victory.
Nazareth improved to 9-4-1 overall and 4-1 in the E8 following its third straight win. Fisher dropped to 7-4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference games. The Golden Flyers, attempting to create some separation in their quest for an E8 playoff berth, have two games left — Saturday at Stevens and Oct. 28 at home against Houghton.
Crespo goal, his fifth of the season, was unassisted and came after he dribbled through a couple of Fisher defenders and unleashed a left-footed shot from about 10 yards out that settled into the lower right corner.
Sophomore Brian Wilkin earned his sixth shutout of the season by making five saves, none bigger than the stop he made on a penalty kick with less than five minutes left in regulation. After a Nazareth foul in the penalty area, Fisher’s Justin Ferron was awarded the penalty kick. His bid to the lower right corner was stopped by the diving Wilkin, who lowered his goals-against average to 0.71.
Fisher had edges in total shots (15-11) and corner kicks (5-3) with two of Nazareth’s shots coming in overtime. Crespo had four of Nazareth’s shots and Matt Gasbarre had two. Joe Catalfamo made four saves for Fisher.
