ROCHESTER, NY — Sophomore Sami Alur (Fremont, CA/Irvington) scored in the 77th minute to lift the RIT (8-3-1, 2-2-1 Liberty League) women’s soccer to a 1-0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (6-4-2, 3-1-1 Liberty League) in a critical Liberty League contest from Tiger Stadium Friday afternoon as part of Brick City Homecoming & Family Weekend. With the win, the Tigers move into a tie for fifth place in the league standings with Clarkson University.
Shots were 11-5 in favor of RIT, while corner kicks were even at 2-2. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) got the win in net for the Tigers, while Joey Lyons took the loss for the Engineers, making five saves.
RIT had chances in the first half, but failed to score. Marla Roberts (Penfield, NY/Home Schooled) had a shot saved by Lyons in the 15th minute off a service from Elena Wolfe (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany). Wolfe and Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) had shots midway through the first half. Wolfe’s shot was saved, while Polanco’s effort sailed just wide.
Maddie Castrellon had a chance for RPI in the 37th minute on a shot from the top of the box that went wide of the target. Mia White (Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School) had a chance for RIT just before halftime that Lyons was able to get a hand on and keep the game scoreless.
The Tigers had a flurry of action in front of the Rensselaer net early in the second half. Morgan Monteith(West Chester, PA/Villa Maria Academy) and Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) each had chances inside the RPI penalty box, but neither could not get a shot away.
RIT would strike in the 77th minute. Alur took control of the ball in the middle of the field. She cut back and fired a shot from 20-yards out that beat Lyons into the left side to give the Tigers the lead. It was Alur’s second goal of the season.
RIT’s defense, ranked second in the Liberty League, shut down the Engineers the rest of the way to preserve the shutout.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 14 when they hosts Skidmore College at 2 p.m. Prior to the start, the Tigers will honor its six seniors.
