PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women’s soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime to the Utica College Pioneers, in a mid-season Empire 8 matchup. The Cardinals fall to 3-8-1 overall, while dropping to 1-1-1 in the Empire 8. Utica moves to 4-6-1 on the year, while jumping to 1-2 in the conference.
The first half was filled with back and forth action by both teams. Fisher’s best scoring opportunity came when Hannah Buschner found the ball with the Utica goalkeeper out of place, Buschner fired a shot, which the Utica saved with a diving grab.
At the end of the half, the Cardinals held the 7-4 shooting edge over the Pioneers. Makenzie Winslow and Logan Chase both fired two shots in the half.
Utica got on the board first just over one minute into the second half. A Utica player took a shot from 25 yards out, Melissa McGowan then recorded the save, deflecting the ball up off the top crossbar, however a Pioneer player was there to head in the rebound shot.
Fisher answered in the 75th minute, when Makenzie Winslow fired a cross from the left side, finding Kerri Orbach who would shake the Utica defenders and bury her third goal of the season.
Chase took Fisher’s last shot attempt of regulation with just over three minutes remaining, however, the ball would just sail wide of the net, forcing the Empire 8 showdown into overtime.
The Cardinals would eventually be undone in just over six minutes into the overtime period, when a Utica player dribbled down the field and took a shot from 15 yards out, just out of McGowan’s reach, sealing the game for Utica.
Fisher finished the game outshooting the Pioneers, 21-11. Chase finished with four shots, while Buschner, Winslow, Jackie Romano and Elise Olivo each blasted three shots of their own.
McGowan took the loss in net, totaling five saves in net, over 96 and a half minutes of play.
Fisher jumps right back into conference play, taking the field at 1 p.m. on Sunday against the nationally ranked, Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks on the turf of Growney Stadium.
