ROCHESTER, NY – Nazareth survived an extremely physical contest Saturday, downing Alfred 1-0 on a first half goal from Josh Crespo. The Golden Flyers were shown four yellow cards, while Alfred had two. In all, 28 fouls were called in the game.
Nazareth improves to 7-4-1 overall with the win and 3-1 in conference play, while Alfred drops to 3-7-1 and 2-1-1, respectively. The seven wins for Nazareth already exceeds the Golden Flyers 2016 mark of 6-8-1, with four games remaining in the regular season.
The Golden Flyers created several strong opportunities in the first half, beginning with Tristan Custer firing shot from 30-yards out, hitting the top of the crossbar in the fifth minute.
Shortly after, Crespo dribbled through several defenders and cranked a left-footed shot from inside the 18-yard box into the far post to give the Golden Flyers a 1-0 lead. Crespo led the Golden Flyers with three shots in the game.
Nazareth had seven shots in the half, including a Mitchell Fors header that forced Alfred goalkeeper Chris Gutierrez to make a difficult save.
It was 1-0 Nazareth at the break.
Nazareth’s Serkan Ozay had the best opportunity in the second half as he ripped a shot from 16-yards out that the Alfred goalkeeper pushed aside with 3:15 remaining.
Brian Wilkin recorded his fifth shutout of the season, making five saves in net.
Zach Titus, Matt Gasbarre, and Custer each added two shots apiece towards Nazareth’s game total of 15. Alfred finished the game with 13 shots.
Nazareth returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Alfred State for a 7 p.m. showdown.
