FAUVER STADIUM – The University of Chicago maintained its unblemished record and its #1 ranking with a 3-0 victory over the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon.
It was the University Athletic Association opener for each team. Rochester is 5-3-1 overall, 0-1-0 in the UAA. Chicago is 10-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 in the UAA.
Jenna McKinney and Katie Jasinski produced great solo efforts to score Chicago’s first two goals. The third goal came five minutes from the end when Mia Calamari directed a free kick into the net.
Madilynne Lee made seven saves in goal for UR. Chicago’s Katie Donovan made one save in 65:16. Miranda Malone had two saves in 24:44. Donovan started and was replaced at halftime. Malone came on but left 25 minutes into the second half when she was injured in a collision chasing a loose ball. Donovan “relieved” and finished the game.
Rochester’s best chance came six minutes into the match with the score still 0-0. Shayna Levy intercepted a clearing pass and put a thru ball into the box that Jorie Freitag collected. She cut in alone and fired, but Donovan, who came off the line, punched it wide for a corner kick.
Shortly thereafter, the Maroons broke free on a counter attack. McKinney got the ball 10 yard shy of midfield. She began a twisting run around and past defenders. As she neared the Rochester penalty area, she fired under Lee’s dive into the lower left hand corner for a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.
Lee made a couple of good first half saves on Madori Spiker. The Yellowjackets had a chance at an equalizer in the 28th minute. Sydney Melton tried a long free kick from just over midfield, but Donovan was aggressive, coming off the line to catch it as white shirts crashed into the box.
UC notched its second goal in the 44th minute. On a breakout from defense, Maddie DeVoe pushed a pass into the path of Jasinski. She raced downfield, then past the last defender. In a 1v1 against Lee, she managed to direct her shot under Lee’s dive.
Malone did well to deny a lead pass for Freitag in the first 13 minutes after the restart. With 20 minutes left, Kerri Eden and Malone collided in the box chasing a lead pass and both went down . After a stoppage for the injuries to be treated, Donovan came back into goal.
Calamari’s free kick in the 85th minute was a just reward. Earlier in the second half, she had a kick from the same location that swerved past a tangle of legs and just past the left post with that side of the goal open.
