NEW PLATZ, N.Y.— The College at Brockport men’s soccer team fended off a persistent SUNY New Paltz unit to earn a 3-2 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory Friday afternoon.
The victory moves The Golden Eagles to 6-2-2 on the year with a 2-0-1 conference record. The loss pushed New Paltz to a 4-6 mark and 0-3 in league play.
The Green and Gold got off to a hot start with Jason Hayes knocking in his second goal of the season, chipping a deflected ball over the opposing goalie in the fourth minute. Quintin Volpe added to the lead in the 11th minute, after a pass by Justin Mercer went over the top of the defenders and allow Volpe the opportunity. The score remained 2-0 going into half time.
“I was very pleased with the way we started the match, scoring two quick goals and executing our game plan,” commented head coach Gary LaPietra.
Brockport saw their lead diminish to 2-1 after a New Paltz goal in the 46th minute, but Russel Hines gave the Golden Eagle an insurance goal in the 74th minute after a well-placed cross by Volpe set him up to head the ball in the net and bring the score to 3-1. New Paltz made a push in the final minutes of the game scoring a goal in the 80th minute to cut the game to 3-2, but the Green and Gold held on for the win.
“The team was outstanding today winning on the road,” stated coach LaPietra. “Overall we defended well under pressure to close out the game.”
Goalkeeper Joseph Romano made three saves in his 90 minutes of play. Volpe led the team in shots with five as Brockport outshot the Hawks 12 to 10.
The Golden Eagles are back in action at 1 p.m. on Sept. 30 when they travel to face Oneonta for a SUNYAC matchup.
