PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men’s soccer team suffered the 3-1 loss to Union College. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 5-2-3 overall, while the Dutchmen advance to 7-1-1 on the year.
The first half was marked by even play, with Fisher and Union registering three shots apiece. The Cardinals had their best scoring opportunity with five minutes remaining in the half when Nick Heffler blasted a shot from about 30 yards out, which was eventually stopped by the Dutchmen goalkeeper.
Heffler, Joe Balls and Michael Piccarreto each tallied a shot in the first half of play. Joe Catalfamoregistered two saves to keep the score drawn at zero heading into the second half of play.
The scoreless tie would be broken in the 63rd minute when a Union defender was able to breakaway from the Fisher defenders, and fire the ball into the lower left corner to make the score, 1-0.
The Cardinals would score the equalizer in the 79th minute when Bryan Rollins was taken down in the six yard box by a Union defender. Justin Ferron would bury the penalty kick in the right corner of the net to knot the score at one.
However, Union would go on to score two more goals in the final seven minutes of play to defeat Fisher, 3-1. The second goal was deflected by a Fisher player, gathered by a Dutchmen player and tapped into the net. The third and final goal of the contest would be scored on an attempted pass back from the Fisher defense to Catalfamo, however a Union player would rush the defense, and eventually volley the ball up and into the net.
Fisher would finish the game with the shooting edge over Union, 10-9. Ferron, Heffler, Balls, and Piccarreto all finished the game with two shots apiece. The Cardinals also generated six total corner kicks in the game.
Catalfamo would take the loss in net, finishing the game with four saves in 90 minutes of play.
Fisher returns to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday against The Sage Colleges, as the Cardinals meet up with the Gators for the first time in as Empire 8 opponents.
