PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women’s soccer team earned its first Empire 8 Conference win of the season, defeating Houghton College, 1-0. The victory puts Fisher at 1-0 in the conference, while jumping to 3-5 overall. The Highlanders drop to 0-1 in the Empire 8, while falling to 2-4 on the year.
At the end of the first half, Fisher drew the 8-6 edge in shots over Houghton. The first goal came in the 21st minute when Emily Murray sent a cross into the six yard box from the right side, finding Hannah Buschner to bury the ball into the lower left corner of the net. The goal marked Buschner’s third of the season.
Melissa McGowan kept the shutout alive at the end of the half, tallying four total saves.
The score remained 1-0 for the entirety of the second half. Houghton had its best chance to knot the score at 1, when a Highlander was able to shake the defense and go one on one with McGowan. McGowan was able to make the diving stop, deflecting the ball to her left, preserving the shutout.
Fisher and Houghton ended the game knotted in shots at 12 apiece. Buschner would finish with three shots, while Elise Olivo and Abigail Barr each added two shots of their own.
McGowan would pick up the shutout win, recording six saves on the day, over all 90 minutes of play.
Fisher returns to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as it travels to Ithaca to face its former Empire 8 Conference rival.
