PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men’s soccer team came away with its first Empire 8 Conference victory, defeating Utica College, 2-0. With the win, Fisher advances to 5-1-3 overall, while sitting at 1-1 in conference play. With the loss, Utica moves to 5-5 while falling to 0-2 in Empire 8 play.
The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the board, when Bryan Rollins blasted a shot just shy of 40 yards out, eventually finding the back of the net above the Utica goalkeeper’s head for his fifth goal of the season. Fisher would go into the half with the lone goal, however, outshooting the Pioneers, 9-4. Rollins led the charge for the Cardinals, registering four of the nine shots. Tyler Randall fired two shots of his own in the half.
Joe Catalfamo made critical saves for the Cardinals, recording three big stops in the half to preserve the shutout.
The second half was all Fisher. The second goal came in the 84th minute of the contest, when Justen Polk crossed a ball from the right corner, eventually finding Brian Norman who fired the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
The Cardinals would finish the game with an impressive, 25-7 edge over Utica in shots. Fisher also recorded a team high 12 corner kicks in the game. Rollins would record a team leading nine shots in the contest.
Catalfamo would pick up his fifth win in net, tallying four saves in the 90 minute shutout.
Fisher returns to the pitch at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, under the lights of Growney Stadium against Union College.
