Rochester, NY – The Nazareth College men’s soccer team held a large disparity in shots, 22-6 on Saturday, however it was the visiting Elmira Soaring Eagles who came out victorious 2-0 in an Empire 8 showdown. Elmira scored a goal in each half to earn the victory.
With the loss, Nazareth falls to 4-3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Elmira improves to 2-6-1 and 1-1 in Empire 8 play.
The Soaring Eagles made good on one of their early chances as Michael Courtney buried a shot from 8-yards out in the 12th minute to open the scoring.
The Golden Flyers most promising opportunity of the opening half came on a Dan Serpe shot from 25 yards out in the 30th minute that just sailed over the crossbar.
Nazareth dominated the second half of play, outshooting the opposition 16-2, with the majority of the action taking place in Elmira’s defensive end. The Golden Flyers generated several quality opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net.
The visitors added another goal in the 55th minute as Donte Donegal cut in from the endline and threaded a pass to Brendan Wise for a one-time goal.
Freshman Matt Gasbarre nearly put the hosts on the board in the 60th minute as he took a left footed, angled shot eight yards out which the Elmira goalie made a nice save on.
In the 71st minute Gasbarre had another strong chance, blasting a shot from 16-yards out that was pushed aside. He led the Golden Flyers with six shots in the contest.
Brian Wilkin made two saves in net.
Nazareth returns to the pitch on Tuesday, hosting Pitt-Bradford at 7 p.m.
