POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The RIT (6-1-1, 0-0-1 Liberty League) women’s soccer team opened Liberty League play with a 1-1 tie at Vassar (4-2-2, 0-0-1 Liberty League) Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Sami Alur (Fremont, CA/Irvington) scored in the 87th minute to help the Tigers earn the draw.
Shots were 20-15 in RIT’s favor. The Tigers took five corner kicks to one for Vassar. Ashley Ferry tallied Vassar’s goal, while Alur scored her first goal of the season for RIT. Fiona Walsh was in net for Vassar, making nine saves, while Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) made five saves in net for the Tigers.
After a scoreless first half, Vassar took the lead in the 57th minute. Ferry was able to run by Rogers when she slid for the ball in the six-yard box to score a goal in the far corner.
RIT responded, tallying in the 87th minute to tie it up. Alur scored off a header on an assist to the center of the box from Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt). It was Thiel’s team-leading sixth assist of the season.
“We showed great character coming back in the final minutes,” said RIT head coach Liz Masterson. “We got a lot of hard work from a lot of different players today. The effort was great, as usual, for this team.”
The Tigers had a chance late in the second overtime on a flurry inside the Vassar penalty area forcing Walsh to make a save. RIT had a last-gasp effort on the ensuing corner, but time ran out.
RIT returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 27, hosting No. 7 William Smith College at 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
