ROCHESTER, NY — The RIT (2-4-1, 0-1-0 Liberty League) men’s soccer team opened Liberty League play with a 2-1 loss to Vassar College (4-3-1, 1-0-0 Liberty League) at sun-drenched Tiger Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Shots were 12-10 in favor of RIT. The Tigers took five corner kicks to two for the Brewers. Hayden Van Brewer and Jose Novas scored for Vassar, while Jared Short (Grafton, WI/Cedarburg) tallied for the Tigers. Will Marment got the win in net for Vassar, making seven saves, while Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) took the loss for RIT, making five stops.

Vassar took the lead on a penalty kick by Van Brewer in the 13th minute. He scored into the bottom right corner to give the Brewers and early lead.

Anthony DeFeo (Rochester, NY/Hilton) had a chance in the 21st minute when his shot was blocked away by a Vassar defender. The rebound came back to DeFeo who fired the shot just over the cross bar and out of play.

Novas gave Vassar a 2-0 lead on his goal in the 27th minute. Reid Smith sent a service down the channel to Novas who headed a shot first time past Cinibulk to give the Brewers a two-goal edge.

In the second half, RIT had a chance with a little over 37 minutes to play when Nick Simone (Hilton, NY/Hilton) got free inside the Vassar box. His shot was saved by Marment. Simon Garno (Hilton, NY/Hilton) had a couple chances off the rebound, but Marment made the saves.

The Tigers broke through in the 81st minute when Short scored on a header off a free kick from Garno. From just 40 yards out, Garno sent in a nice service that Short got a head to and scored to cut the Vassar lead to 2-1. RIT had its chances down the stretch to get the equalizer but could not break through.

Vassar improves to 5-2-1 all time versus RIT.

The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 27 when they face Hobart College at 4 p.m. in Geneva, N.Y.
