BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport men’s soccer team opened up State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a 3-2 victory over Fredonia State on Friday.
The win moves Brockport to a 5-2-1 record and 1-0 in conference play. The Blue Devils fall to 5-2 and 0-1 in league play.
The Golden Eagles took an early lead on the Blue Devils after a cross was flicked on by Jake Fusilli and gave Chris Aherne the opportunity to head in his third goal of the season. Quintin Volpe would add to the lead, netting a penalty kick in the top right corner, bringing the score to 2-0 after the 15th minute. The Brockport defense would remain strong the remainder of the half as they went into the break with a 2-0 lead.
The Green and Gold would not let up in the second half. Connor DeSantis headed in his first goal of the season after another assist for Fusilli, giving Brockport a 3-0 lead in the 47th minute. Fredonia would cut into the lead, scoring two goals in a ten-minute period to make it a 3-2 game. The Golden Eagles locked up on defense the rest of the game thanks to the leadership of Connor Melanophy and great play from fellow defenders Aherne and Stephen Latino.
“It was a very difficult SUNYAC opener and a game of momentum,” commented head coach Gary LaPietra. “I am absolutely proud of how the team kept their composure dealing with the anxiety of closing out the match.”
Brockport will host SUNYAC foe Buffalo State at 1 p.m. on Saturday Sept. 23, as they continue conference play.
