FAUVER STADIUM –Paige Gloster and Hayley Orciuch made a dynamic combo on Wednesday evening for the University of Rochester. They produced both goals in a 2-0 victory over Houghton College.
Gloster scored twice in a span of two minutes – both assisted by Orciuch – to give Rochester its fifth win this year. The Yellowjackets are 5-1-1. Houghton had a two-game winning streak snapped. The Highlanders are 2-3.
The goals were a just reward, particularly for Gloster who had a header cleared off the line midway through the second half and six minutes later, looped a shot just over the crossbar and into the roof of the net.
The first goal came at 78:44. Orciuch came up the middle and flicked the ball ahead to Gloster running into the box. She snapped a header over the left shoulder of Houghton goalkeeper Sadie Dunnett who charged off the line. The shot settled inside the right post for a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, Christina Feller played a ball into the center for Orciuch who strode forward before releasing it angled to the right where it was collected by Gloster between two defenders. She took two brief steps, turned, and hammered a shot into the upper left hand corner of the net.
Kerri Eden was denied two good chances in the last five minutes. She swept into the box on the left side and as she tried to shoot, Houghton’s Megan Stoltzfus poked the ball away. With less than three minutes left, Sydney Melton played a long ball down the left wing to Eden in full flight. She cut sharply into the box and fired – only to see the shot denied by the crossbar.
Stoltzfus made an excellent defensive play midway through the second period. Rochester had a corner kick out of the right side. Liz Mastoloni centered it and Gloster headed it past Dunnett towards the left post. Stoltzfus was positioned perfectly. She blocked the shot, then cleared it off the line.
Dunnett finished with seven saves, six in the second half. Stoltzfus had a team save for the Highlanders. For Rochester, Emma Campbell picked up her first shutout victory. She made two saves. Rochester outshot Houghton, 19-3, 10-2 in shots on goal.
The Yellowjackets play at Nazareth College on Tuesday. UR opens the University Athletic Association season on September 30 when Chicago – currently ranked No. 2 nationally – comes to Fauver Stadium.
