PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior midfielder Logan Wood‘s goal in the 40th minute of play was the difference in a 2-1 decision over Chestnut Hill that gave the Roberts Wesleyan men’s soccer team their second win of the season.
Wood tallied his first goal of the season in the first half of play on Wednesday afternoon off a feed from Matt Ketzer. The score gave the Redhawks a 2-1 lead late in the first half and the Roberts’ defense was able to fend off the Griffins for the entire second half to hold the lead and pick up the win in the nonconference matchup.
The Redhawks opened the scoring in the game with help from the host Chestnut Hill. In the 21st minute Roberts received a throw in that was thrown deep into the attacking box which was knocked in for an own goal by the Griffins. Just under one minute later the score was knotted back up at 1-1 when Chestnut Hill senior midfielder Vini Brito collected a loose ball in the Redhawks’ defensive backline to score his fourth goal of the season.
“It was not the prettiest of wins, but we got the job done,” said head coach Scott Reber.
Senior defender Sam Moody led Roberts with three shots including two on goal. John Ciavaglia helped the Redhawks secure the victory with seven saves in net.
Roberts (2-5, 1-0 ECC) has now won two straight games heading into an important East Coast Conference matchup on Saturday against Molloy. The homecoming weekend game is slated to begin after the women’s soccer game at 3:30 p.m.
