PITTSFORD, NY — Freshman Rachel Strader (Seneca, SC/Seneca) scored her first collegiate goal in the 44th minute to lead the RIT (6-1-0) women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Nazareth College (4-2-1) in non-conference action from Golden Flyer Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
Shots were 9-7 in favor of Nazareth. RIT took four corner kicks to three for the Golden Flyers. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) got the win in net, making six saves. Hannah Miller took the loss for Nazareth, making three saves.
RIT generated the better of the scoring chances in the first half. Sami Alur (Fremont, CA/Irvington) had a chance in the 14th minute that went wide. Marla Roberts (Penfield, NY/Home Schooled) had two chances towards the end of the half that were blocked away and wide of the net.
The Tigers finally broke through in the 44th minute. Roberts got free down the Nazareth flank and sent a service into the penalty area. The ball came to Strader and she fired a shot first time from 25 yards out that found the top left corner. The goal was the first of her collegiate career.
Julia Delgatti had a chance for Nazareth early in the second half when she fired a shot off a long service that Rogers corraled for the save. Mary Kate Ordway and Nicole Petocchi had chances in the 49th minute. Ordway fired a shot from in close that Rogers saved. She was able to grab the shot off the rebound from Petocchi to keep it a one-goal advantage.
Jordyn Ruston had a chance inside the last five minutes, but again, Rogers was up to the task and made the save. Ruston hit her shot first time from close range. But, Rogers was positioned perfectly, and made the save.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 23 when the squad begins Liberty League play at Vassar College. Kick-off from Poughkeepsie, N.Y. is at 3 p.m.
