ELMIRA, N.Y.—The College at Brockport men’s soccer team came out on top in nail-biting fashion, beating Elmira College by a score of 1-0. The Golden Eagles move to 4-2-1 on the year while Elmira falls to 1-5-1.
Brockport came out firing in the first half, unleashing nine shots at the Elmira goal. However, the Soaring Eagles were able to withstand the offense and did not allow any scoring. The Green and Gold would play strong defense as well, only allowing three shots. The match headed into halftime in a 0-0 draw.
The Golden Eagles continued to possess the ball in the second half and finally saw their hard work pay off. In the 82nd minute a Cameron Beale corner kick was headed in by Chris Aherne for the first goal of the game and his second of the season. The defense would stand firm and only let up four shots in the second half, as Brockport held off Elmira and were victorious by a score of 1-0.
“We played outstanding today with a collective defensive effort,” commented head coach Gary LaPietra. “I was very pleased with our transition into the attack. It was difficult to get behind Elmira, but Aherne scored an excellent goal for the winner.”
The Green and Gold come back home on Friday Sept. 22 at 3 p.m. when they open up SUNYAC conference play against Fredonia.
