BRIDGEPORT, CONN. – The Roberts Wesleyan men’s soccer team came up with a huge East Coast Conference victory on Saturday night, defeating the University of Bridgeport, 4-1.
It was the first win of the season for the Redhawks who now hold a 1-5 record but are 1-0 in the ECC.
Freshman Marko Mitrevski and sophomore Terrell Spencer both played the best games of their college careers. Mitrevski scored two goals to up his total to three on the season. Spencer was a playmaker in the game adding one goal and three assists to help power the Redhawks’ offense.
Mitrevksi opened the scoring in the game with a goal in the ninth minute of play off the feed from Spencer. The Redhawks held the 1-0 lead through the remainder of the first half.
The Purple Knights tied the score 1-1 in the second half at the 59:05 mark, but Roberts wouldn’t allow another goal and would come back with three goals of their own to secure the all-important conference win. Spencer netted the game-winner in the 64th minute after running onto a ball played in by senior Logan Wood and beating the keeper one on one. It was Spencer’s first goal of the 2017 campaign.
Mitrevski added an insurance goal in the 76th minute to go up 3-1 followed by an Alex Loete goal in the 85thminute to put the stamp on the win.
Despite the three goal difference the Redhawks were outshot in the contest 19-9, but Roberts gained the edge in shots on goal with six to Bridgeport’s three.
The Redhawks will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. on Wednesday to take on Chestnut Hill at 3 p.m. They will host Molloy on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for Roberts’ Homecoming Weekend.
