ROCHESTER, NY — The RIT (1-0-0) women’s soccer team opened its 2017 season with an impressive 3-0 win over Allegheny College (0-1-0) in the opening game of the 2017 Rachel Miller Memorial Tournament on Friday afternoon from sun-drenched Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers were in control from the start, out-shooting Allegheny 18-2, while taking eight corner kicks to just one for the Gators. Eleven different players had at least one shot for RIT.
Marla Roberts (Penfield, NY/Home Schooled), Elena Wolfe (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) and Mia White(Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School) each scored for RIT, while freshman Piper Zimmerman(Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) had a pair of assists. Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) made one save, earning her first win of the season and seventh career shutout. Maya Hackman took the loss in net for Allegheny, making nine saves.
The Tigers fired nine shots in the first half, including five on net. Roberts gave RIT a 1-0 lead on her goal in the 38th minute. Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) sent in a service off a corner kick into the Allegheny penalty box. Roberts deflected the ball into the open net to give the Tigers a one-goal halftime lead.
Wolfe gave RIT a 2-0 lead on her goal in 58th minute. Zimmerman found Wolfe with a throw deep in the Allegheny end. Wolfe turned and fired over the head of Hackman and into the net for her first goal of the season.
White made it 3-0 RIT in the 69th minute. Zimmerman sent a ball into the Allegheny penalty area. Two Gators defenders bobbled the clearance and White tapped the loose ball into the open net.
With the win, RIT improves to 4-0-1 all time versus Allegheny. The Tigers are now 6-1-1 in season openers under head coach Liz Masterson.
The Tigers are right back in action on Saturday, Sept. 2 when they host SUNY Oneonta at 1 p.m. on the grass at Tiger Stadium for day two of the Miller Tournament.
