ROCHESTER, NY – Rochester Red Wings catcher Mitch Garver has been named the International League Batter of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Garver batted .321 (9-for-28) with two doubles, five home runs, eight RBI and 10 runs scored in seven games during the week. He led the league in home runs, total bases (26), runs scored and slugging (.929) while tying for the league-lead in extra-base hits (7) during the week, which began July 3. Garver capped his week with his second career three homer day, going deep three times on Sunday vs. Syracuse to end the pre-All-Star break schedule. He became the first Red Wing to hit three home runs at home since Cal Ripken, Jr. at Silver Stadium on April 27, 1981 vs. Charleston. The other time Garver went yard three times was with Single-A Cedar Rapids on July 21, 2014 vs. Fort Wayne.
Adam Brett Walker (May 21 at Durham) and ByungHo Park (July 28 at Pawtucket) both tallied three homer games for Rochester last season. Before that, the last Wing to hit three home runs in one game was Leo Gomez on April 9, 1990.
Garver is the first Rochester catcher to be named IL Batter of the Week since Wilson Ramos on June 7, 2010. He joins Jose Berrios (2x) and Nik Turley as Red Wings to earn a weekly league honor in 2017.
