The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) has named Jamestown Jammers outfielder Collin Stack (UMBC) the Player of the Week and Amsterdam Mohawks right-hander Brandon Reitz (Florida State) the Pitcher of the Week for the fourth week of the 2017 season.
For the league-leading Jammers (21-5), this week’s selection marks time second that the Player of the Week has come from Jamestown, as Christ Conley (Canisius) was recognized during the first week of the summer campaign. In six games during the seven-day span from June 26 to July 2, Stack batted .368 (7-for-19) with one triple, two home runs, seven runs scored and 11 RBIs. He was one of four players to hit multiple homers last week, ranked second in the PGCBL in RBI over that stretch, and was tied for fourth in runs scored, all while guiding the Jammers to an unblemished 6-0 record.
Stack, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound outfielder from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, began his week with a phenomenal outing against Adirondack on June 27, as he finished 3-for-6 with two home runs, three runs scored and a season-high seven RBIs, fueling the Jammers’ 19-5 blowout over the Trail Blazers. The following day, the Jamestown, N.Y., native went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI in a lopsided win over Onondaga. On June 29 in Newark, he batted 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI triple. He also recorded a hit and run in a 5-3 road win over Saugerties on July 2.
Reitz is the third member of the East Division-leading Mohawks (18-7) to be honored by the PGCBL so far this season, joining Week 3 co-Players of the Week Liam Wilson (Canisius) and T.J. Collett (Kentucky). Reitz made two appearances out of the bullpen for Amsterdam and went 1-0 with a save in 7.0 scoreless innings. He also combined to strike out 13 batters while walking two and surrendering just one hit in his two outings.
The freshman from Florida State first toed the rubber on June 27 in a wild extra-inning affair against Utica. Reitz was subbed into the game to start the top of the eighth inning with the Mohawks trailing the Blue Sox 7-6. He proceeded to punch out five of the six batters he faced in the regulation innings, while his offense tied the game at 7-all in the bottom of the ninth. Overall, the 6-foot-1 righty tossed six perfect innings with 12 strikeouts, until Eric Rivera (Florida Atlantic) hit a walk-off homer in the 13th to win the game 8-7. Reitz then picked up his first save of the summer season on July 2, when Amsterdam finished its halted game against Albany from June 7. The product of Ocala, Fla., hurled a scoreless 11th inning to preserve a 7-4 lead and lock down the win.
