The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) has announced that Geneva outfielder Mikey Arman (Kenyon) and Oneonta right-hander Jake Hershman (Wofford) have been named Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Week 2 of the 2017 season.
Arman is the second Red Wing to be honored so far this season, as teammate Brian Reed (RIT) was crowned the Pitcher of the Week for Week 1. Hershman becomes just the second Oneonta player to be recognized by the league with a weekly accolade, joining former Outlaw Logan Brown (Baylor), who was named the Player of the Week during Week 2 of the 2012 season.
In five games last week, Arman compiled a robust slash line of .409/.480/.995, as he amassed nine hits with eight RBIs and seven runs scored. He produced at least one hit in all five games, and five of those nine hits went for extra bases, as the rising senior smacked one double, one triple and three home runs. Arman began his week with one of the finest individual performances of the young season in an 18-6 rout of Adirondack on June 12, when he finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish with three home runs and six RBIs; he was also walked twice to reach base safely in all six of his plate appearances. Arman also posted a multi-hit outing in a 13-4 victory over Newark on June 16, going 2-for-6 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored.
On the season, Arman boasts a .373 batting average (19-for-51) in 12 games, and ranks second in the league in hits (19), home runs (3) and RBIs (13). The 6-foot outfielder from Fairfield, Conn., has helped revitalize the Geneva franchise in its second year in the PGCBL, as the Red Wings have already tied their 2016 total with nine wins and are sit second in the West Division with a 9-5 overall record.
Hershman has been awarded for the eight shutout innings he tossed against Onondaga on June 14. Although he did not factor into the decision – the Flames walked off in the bottom of the ninth for a 1-0 win – the righty pieced together one of the best starts of the 2017 season, scattering four hits across 8.0 scoreless frames. He struck out seven in the contest and his stuff didn’t diminish throughout his lengthy outing, as he caught Onondaga’s Stephen Bennett looking for the first out of the eighth and fanned Anthony Scalzo for the third out of the inning.
Through his first three appearances of the summer, Dacula, Ga., native has been one of the PGCBL’s best pitchers. The Wofford Terrier ranks third among qualifiers with a 1.29 ERA and is tied for sixth with 17 strikeouts in 14.0 innings. Opposing batters are hitting a mere .170 off of the rising sophomore.
