ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure University juniors Aaron Phillips and Cole Peterson continued their incredible weeks by taking All-Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) which named Phillips to the Northeast first team and Peterson to the second team.
It marks the first time since 2006 that the Bonnies have earned multiple ABCA/Rawlings All-Region selections in the same season.
The 2017 ABCA/Rawlings All-Region teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association. By earning a first team all-region selection, Phillips is now nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. That team will be announced on Saturday, June 17.
Phillips, who became the highest St. Bonaventure Major League Baseball Draft pick in program history when he was selected in the ninth round by the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, wrapped his junior season by being named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year. He tied the Bonnies all-time season wins record and led the A-10 with nine victories while also striking out 90 batters in 100.2 innings of work. He limited opponents to a .213 batting average against and posted a 3.04 ERA including two complete games.
One of three starting pitchers selected to the Northeast Region First Team, Phillips joins Beau Sulser of Dartmouth and Sean Mooney of St. John’s to receive All-America nominations from the region.
A 13th round selection in the MLB Draft on Wednesday by the Detroit Tigers, Peterson landed on the all-region second team for his stellar play at shortstop. He led the Bonnies in batting average (.335), runs (40), hits (64), on-base percentage (.409), doubles (16) and stolen bases (24). He tied for the league lead in stolen bags and posted 19 multi-hit games including nine three-hit games. In Atlantic 10 play, he boasted a .376 batting average along with a .444 on-base percentage.
