NYSPHSAA Far West Regional action will take place at three sites on Saturday: Rochester’s Frontier Field, Niagara Falls High School and Russell Diethrick Park in Jamestown. Here’s the rundown.
Class AA: Section V Champion McQuaid (16-5) vs. Section VI Champion Clarence (18-5)
Saturday at Niagara Falls High 3 p.m.
McQuaid, ranked No. 7 in the latest NYS Class AA poll, defeated Rush-Henrietta in the Section V Class AA final, 3-2. McQuaid looks to the leadership of senior Tyler Cyrus (.341, 12RBI), junior Erik Johnson (28.1 IP, 2.71 ERA, 18K, 7BB, 2-2), senior Billy Kehrig (.396, 19 RBI, 13R, 2-2B, 2-3B, .609 avg w/RISP) and sophomore Hunter Walsh (2.30 ERA, 27.1IP, 21K, 9BB, 3-0, 2 SV).
Clarence, ranked No. 6 NYS Class AA, beat Williamsville North in the Sction VI title game, 17-2 and allowed just four runs over three tournament games. Clarence has advanced on the backs of seniors Bennett Cavaretta, Nick Ciraolo and Jared Shalke, juniors Mike O’ Brien and Nicholas Sykas and sophomore Jack Putney.
The two teams last played April 29. McQuaid won 3-0.
2017 NYSPHSAA Baseball Championships Class AA
Class A: Section V Champion Pittsford Sutherland (15-9) vs. Section VI Champion Olean (17-1)
Saturday at Frontier Field 7 p.m.
Pittsford Sutherland advanced to the Far West Regional, defeating Canandaigua in the qualifier. The Knights downed Aquinas in the A2 final for their first title since 2014. Ranked No. 7 in the NYS Class A, Sutherland has been fueled by the play of senior Max Carver (5-1, 1.13 ERA, 43 1/3 IP, 31 H, 49 K, 8 BB, .434), senior Jack Zielinski (3 W, 31 2/3 IP, 3.53 ERA, 40 hits, 20 K, 8 BB, .392), senior Nate Richardson (.413), senior Charlie Pellegrini (.352) and senior Sam Kistler (.333).
Olean, currently ranked at No. 5 for NYS Class A, claimed the Section VI title with a 9-2 win over Williamsville South. Olean advanced to the Far West Regional for the first time in program history and has been propelled by seniors Bryan Bizzaro, Garrett Boldt (2016 First Team CCAA East I All Star and Campbell University commit), Dell Butler (2016 First Team CCAA East I All Star) and Justin Retchless as well as junior Dylan Vincent.
2017 NYSPHSAA Baseball Championships Class A
Class B: Section V Champion Livonia (20-2) vs. Section VI Champion Fredonia (17-4)
Saturday at Niagara Falls High 12 p.m.
Livonia, ranked No. 1 NYS Class B, advanced thanks to a 12-0 win over Hornell in which Reid VanScoter turned in a 21 strikeout, no-hitter performance. VanScoter, a SUNY Binghamton commit, finished the season 8-0 with a 0.28 ERA. He had 90 strike outs over 43.2 innings and issued 11 walks. At the plate he hit .413, with 26 hits, 24 RBI, 20 runs scored. Senior John Smith (.493, .526 OBP, 31 R, 16 RBI, 33 H, 3-2Bs) has also been a key contributor.
Fredonia, ranked No. 6 in Class B for NYS, knocked off Alden in a 4-0 shutout to win the Section VI tournament. Fredonia, which won the Class B title in 2013 and has won the Section VI title a record seven straight seasons, is led by senior Lucas Voss, senior Vince Gullo, junior Ryan Mroczka, junior Seth Schrader, senior Drew Coniglio, senior Cole Tippens, junior Tyler Winchell and sophomore Trey Swartz.
The last match-up between the two teams came a year ago in the Far West Regional.
2017 NYSPHSAA Baseball Championships Class B

Class C: Section V Champion Avon (16-4) vs. Section VI Champion Maple Grove (12-6)
Saturday at Russell Diethrick Park 12 p.m.
Avon, ranked No. 6 in the NYS Class C rankings, defeated LeRoy 6-1 in the regional qualifier. Avon, hoping to return to the Class C title game and avenge last season’s 12-8 loss to North Salem, has been fueled thus far by junior Maxx Countryman (.304, 6 doubles, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 5-2 record, 2.42 ERA, 40K, 12 BB), sophomore Padraig Coyne (4-0 record- 23 K 5 BB .86 ERA), junior Aaron Ghent (.433, 9 doubles, 1 HR, 11 RBI) and junior Peyton Parmeter (.500, 13 doubles, 1 HR 24 RBI).
Maple Grove, sitting at No. 8 in the NYS Class C rankings, beat Allegany-Limestone 5-4 in the Section VI Class C title game. Maple Grove, which last won a state crown in 1992 (Class D), will look for continued production from senior Brandon Reagle (.342), senior Trevor Micek (.300), senior Dalton Dubois (.412), sophomore Easton Tanner (.441) and junior Zak Trim (.370).
2017 NYSPHSAA Baseball Championships Class C
Class D: Section V Champion Lima Christian (18-4) vs. Section VI Champion North Collins (13-5)
Saturday at Frontier Field 4:30 p.m.
Lima Christian, coming in at No. 5 in the NYS Class D rankings, upended Arkport in the D2 championship before knocking off Lyndoville in the qualifier. Lima Christian is led by junior brothers Jayson Faynor (.500, 36 H, 31 R, 18 RBI, 9 -2Bs, 12 SB, 1.36 ERA, 9 W, 101 K) and John Faynor (.471, 32 H, 31 RBI, 28 RBI, 7-2Bs, 5-3Bs, 4 HR, 1.43 ERA, 4 SV, 27 K)
North Collins, No. 6 in the NYS Class D rankings, beat Brocton 7-4 in the Section VI Class D title game. North Collins is led by CCAA EAST II Co-Player of the Year junior Brandon Zielinski (.484, 2 HR, 2-3Bs, 2-2Bs, 15 RBIs, 3-1, 1.45 ERA), junior Trevor Mercado (.333, 4-1, 50 K) and senior Dylan Winter (.348).
