Canandaigua looks to stay on track in A1

No. 1 seed Canandaigua takes on No. 3 seed Brighton. No. 5 seed Greece Arcadia clashes with No. 8 seed Pittsford-Mendon. Spots in the Class A1 finals are up for grabs.

No. 1 seed Canandaigua (16-3) vs. No. 3 seed Brighton (13-7).

Tuesday at Pittsford-Mendon high school, 4:30 pm.

Players to watch:

CANANDAIGUA – Matthew Carbary (3W, 18IP, 11K, 1.90 ERA), Tanner Cooper (5W, 38 IP, 59K, 0.93 ERA/ 1 HR, 17 RBI, 2-2B, 2-3B), Cooper Crunick (.295, 4-2B, 7 RBI), Connor Fisher (375, 8 RBI, 11 R), Brian Hoffman (3W, 21IP, 19K, 0.64 ERA/.341, 8R, 4-2B), Michael Sculli (2W, 32IP, 41K, 2.62 ERA) and Seth Vigneri (.351, 15RBI, 5-2B, 1-3B).

BRIGHTON – Owen Davis (Sr.), Isaac Nelson (Sr., led team in batting average and RBI), Ryan O’Mara (So., 3W), DJ Staszak (Sr.) and Trent Wasserman (So., 3W).

How they got here: Canandaigua defeated No. 7 seed Spencerport, 8-0. Brighton downed sixth-seeded Irondequoit, 7-1.

Previous meetings: Canandaigua beat Brighton twice this season (6-2/5-1).

What to know: Canandaigua, ranked No. 9 NYS Class A, took the A1 title a year ago – the Braves first in 21 years. Canandaigua has won 10 straight heading into the semi-finals with a team batting average of .293, ERA of 1.44 and fielding percentage of .965.

Brighton has won four straight. The Barons last sectional title came in 1996.

No. 5 seed Greece Arcadia (10-10) vs. No. 8 seed Pittsford-Mendon (10-11).

Tuesday at SUNY Brockport, 4:30 pm.

Players to watch:

Greece Arcadia – Justin Augustine (Jr.), Kevin Blum (Sr.) and Thomas Finnerty (Sr.).

Pittsford-Mendon – Jared Petrichick (.318, 21RBI),  George Gines (.333, 15R, 2HR), Colin Smith (.345, 16R), Taylor Genier  (.333, 1HR) and Sam Cestra (2.69ERA, 32K).

How they got here: Arcadia knocked off No. 4 seed Brockport, 6-3. Mendon opened with a 5-3 victory over No. 9 seed Eastridge before toppling top-seeded East, 13-5.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season.

What to know: Arcadia has won four straight and is looking for its first sectional title since 2008.  The Titans lost to Canandaigua in last year’s semi-final round.

Mendon reached the semi-finals for the first time in five years. The Vikings have six one-run losses this season.
