Avon looks to earn trip back to state tournament

Class C2 opens with eight games on May 18th, and the finals are set for May 25th.

No. 1 seed Avon (12-4)

Player(s) to watch: Maxx Countryman (.304, 6 doubles, 2 hr, 15 RBI, 5-2 record, 2.42 ERA, 40 strikeouts 12 BB), Padraig Coyne (4-0 record- 23 strikeouts 5 BB .86 ERA), Aaron Ghent (.433, 9 doubles, 1 HR, 11 RBI) and Peyton Parmeter (.500, 13 doubles, 1 HR 24 RBI).

Trends: Avon, the 2016 Class C1 champion, won seven of its last eight games. The Braves currently No. 12 in the NYS Class C poll.

How the Braves win the title: Everything keeps clicking, and Countryman continues to be a dual-threat for the top seeded Braves.

Stumbling block: They take an early opponent lightly.

No. 2 seed East Rochester (10-5)

Player(s) to watch: Dmitri Georgantonis (.327, 17 runs), Andrew Chilleli (.348, 13 RBI) and Austin Mack (.345, 19 hits, 3 wins, 1.72 ERA).

Trends: East Rochester won its final five games of the regular season.

How the Bombers win the title: The core stay tough and carries them to the title, especially with Mack staying dynamic.

Stumbling block: Lack of depth rears its ugly head, taking a toll deep in games and sends the Bombers home early.

No. 3 seed Campbell Savona (10-5)

Player(s) to watch: Brent Smith (.400, 16 hits), Patrick Dobson (.300, 10 runs) and Quinn Littell (0.19 ERA).

Trends: Campbell Savona split last four games 2-2, ending with a loss. The Panthers rank No. 17 NYS Class C.

How the Panthers win the title: Shake off tough losses and ride Smith and Littell’s standout years to a sectional title.

Stumbling block: Smith and Littell are the only ones to show up in early round games.

No. 4 seed Keshequa (10-7)

Player(s) to watch: Connor Mann (.409, 18 hits, 16 runs), Nick Wood (.357, 20 hits, 14 RBI, 2.12 ERA, 33 strikeouts) and Dustyn Zangerle (.400, 20 hits, 15 runs).

Trends: Keshequa won four straight games to end the regular season.

How the Indians win the title: Offense stays hot and pounds home runs en route to a sectional title.

Stumbling block: Wear and tear from long season cause bats to go cold.

No. 5 seed Bolivar-Richburg (10-8)

Player(s) to watch: Lewis Pettit (.400), Dustin Howard (.371), Joe Gordon (3-1 with a 2.80 ERA), Kristian Miller (.373) and Parker Cole (3-2 with a 2.31 ERA).

Trends: Bolivar-Richburg had its four-game win streak snapped to end the season.

How the Wolverines win the title: They continue to pour on the offense like they did in their 25-1 win against Scio Central.

Stumbling block: They let the loss to Fillmore get to them and come out flat, sending the reigning champs home early.

No. 6 seed Alexander (9-8)

Player(s) to watch: Dane Heberlein (.372), Derrick Busch (.429) and Erik Scharlau (.359).

Trends: Alexander lost its final four games of regular season.

How the Trojans win the title: Find a way to score runs again, building on good habits from early wins and shaking off any doubt, pushing their way to the title.

Stumbling block: The recent losses are too much to overcome and they never regain form, allowing a lower seed to move on.

No. 7 seed Red Jacket (8-10)

Player(s) to watch: Dan Munn (five strike outs, seven appearances).

Trends: Red Jacket lost the final two after winning four straight games.

How the Indians win the title: They learn from being shutout 14-0 to end the year and ride the lesson all the way to an improbable title.

Stumbling block: The struggles continue coming out of the shutout and the Indians are spent, ending their season in the early rounds.

No. 8 seed Lyons (7-12)

Player(s) to watch: Kyle Evans (4 wins, 12 appearances) and Hunter Bastian (3 wins and 5 appearances).

Trends: Lyons lost three of its last four games.

How the Lions win the title: The top two pitchers stand firm through the playoffs and hold the opposition at bay enough to earn the title.

Stumbling block: The two pitchers aren’t enough to pick up any slack and they are unable to last the course of the playoffs.

No. 9 seed Oakfield-Alabama (7-8)

Trends: Oakfield-Alabama had a three-game win streak broken to end year.

 

No. 10 seed Caledonia-Mumford (7-12)

Player(s) to watch: Kyle Carpino (.391, 20 RBI, 20 runs) and Joe Butler (.333, 13 RBI, 17 runs).

Trends: Caledonia-Mumford won four of its final five games to end the regular season.

How the Raiders win the title: They build on a 16-run performance to end the year, keep firing, and rumble, stumble and bumble their way through the tournament.

No. 11 seed Pavilion (5-10)

Player(s) to watch: Kyle Campbell (.289, 11 hits), Clay Swearingen (.265, 13 hits) and Zach Weidrich (3.97 ERA).

Trends: Pavilion lost its final two regular season games.

How the Golden Gophers win the title: The offense picks up and is able to contribute to the overall cause, while the pitching finds a way to limit runs.

Stumbling block: The depth of the lineup doesn’t emerge as much as needed and run production stays static.

No. 12 seed South Seneca/Romulus

No. 13 seed Clyde Savannah (3-13)

Player(s) to watch: Jaret Murray (.512, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 10 RBI.  1-4 3.18 ERA, 55 Ks in 39.1 IP), Tre Kanaley (.321, 2 doubles, 2 RBI, 14 stolen bases), Nick Ramos (.256, .473 OBP, 8 RBI), Zac Montes (.244, 1 double, 7 RBI) and Dylan Ufholz (.213, 1 double, 8 RBI, 12 stolen bases.  1-3, 4.82 ERA, 31 strikeouts, 24.2 IP).

Trends: Clyde Savannah won two of last three, but lost 12 straight prior to the wins.

How the Golden Eagles win the title: Appear to have found their form headed into the postseason, but need to continue to be consistent on both offense and on the mound.

Stumbling block: Had a lot of trouble keeping runs off the board throughout the year, so they can’t rely on the offense to bail them out.

No. 14 seed Cuba Rushford (3-13)

Trends: Cuba-Rushford split its last four games 2-2.

How the Rebels win the title: The Rebels pitching settles in when needed and keeps opponents off the board enough for the offense to earn wins.

Stumbling block: The Rebels continue to give up too many runs and are unable to pull any upsets out.

No. 15 seed Warsaw (2-12)

Player(s) to watch: Tom Standera (.403, .500 OBP, 3 Doubles, 7 Stolen Bases), Mike James (.381, .469 OBP, 2 Wins) and Greg Hare (.366, .447 OBP, 1 Triple).

Trends: Warsaw ended the season on a five-game losing streak.

How the Tigers win the title: They rebound from the losing streak and find a way to limit the runs given up in time to make a run.

Stumbling block: They are crushed by the losing streak and are unable to bring enough energy to compete with the other teams.

No. 16 seed Bishop Kearney (1-10)

Trends: Bishop Kearney picked up its only win in second to last game of the regular season.
