Jason Wheeler surrendered one run on five hits over six innings and Zack Granite finished 3-for-4 and scored the go-ahead run in the 8th inning as the Rochester Red Wings topped the Pawtucket Red Sox 3-2 Friday night at McCoy Stadium.
Granite doubled twice among his three hits, scored two runs and also stole his fourth base of the season. He now leads the Red Wings (16-14) in stolen bases despite playing in just his sixth game of the year.
Wheeler, making his first start since April 27, did not issue a walk or record a strikeout. He benefitted from double plays turned in the 1st, 3rd and 6th innings.
Rochester took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning as Granite led off the game with a double, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Matt Hague‘s sacrifice fly. That was the only damage PawSox (15-16) starter Shawn Haviland would allow. He yielded just three hits and a walk with four strikeouts over six innings.
Pawtucket tied the game in the 6th as Dan Butler doubled and scored on a Rusney Castillo single.
Trevor Hildenberger (2-1) took over for Wheeler to begin the 7th and tossed two scoreless innings with a walk and a strikeout.
Former Twin Blaine Boyer (0-2) tossed a scoreless 7th for the PawSox before the Wings struck in the 8th. Granite doubled down the left-field line and Niko Goodrum hit an RBI triple to left-center to give Rochester a 2-1 advantage. Hauge followed with his second sacrifice fly of the game to extend the lead to 3-1.
Hague’s RBI turned out to be huge as Castillo doubled and scored against Alex Wimmers in the 9th but the Red Wings reliever was still able to record his fourth save.
